Elmwood Park is a longstanding bedroom community for New Orleans
Elmwood Park isn’t the type of neighborhood with abundant nightlife, specialty shops or heavy traffic. Instead, this suburban enclave could best be described as a bedroom community. Built after World War II, these commuter towns sprang up with the idea that people would want peace and quiet after being at work all day. To achieve that, the planners of Elmwood Park made it almost purely residential. The neighborhood, filled with mature trees, runs from the shores of Lake Pontchartrain to the major thoroughfare of West Esplanade Avenue. It’s also close to Williams Boulevard and, true to its inception, allows for easy access to Kenner, Metairie and New Orleans. For those seeking a simple sanctuary away from the worries of the day, Elmwood Park provides residents with a tranquil setting nestled between Kenner and Metairie.
New Traditional and ranch-style homes fill Elmwood Park's streets
Living in Elmwood Park provides residents with walkable roads and plenty of neighbors to meet. Take a stroll to the lake’s levee and enjoy the stunning sunset over the water with a few friends. Returning home, you’ll pass rows of traditionally designed houses with an occasional Tudor, split level or contemporary building. What you’ll mostly find though is ranch-style residences from the 1960s and 1970s. Predominantly made of different colors of brick, these houses have been exceptionally well cared for. Prices range from $290,000 for a three-bedroom, two-bath ranch-style home to $570,000 for a five-bedroom, four-bath dwelling on West Esplanade Avenue.
Public and private Metairie schools offer innovative educations
Students in the area have their choice of private, parochial or public schools. Harold Keller Elementary believes in strong relationships between parents and teachers and works to foster these ties through parenting workshops, family field day and parent-teacher conferences. Airline Park Academy for Advanced Studies is designed to work with students who thrive in a rigorous academic environment. The academy also offers after-school care for children for a weekly fee. John Q. Adams Middle School rests on a 10.5-acre campus near Lake Pontchartrain and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It has two zoological atriums, a talent center and a performing arts center.
The local park doubles as a park and a library
Elmwood Park’s dedicated green space is called Wilson Park and Playground or Elmwood Square depending on who you ask. Whichever you prefer, the 15-acre space is a hidden gem for toddlers and small children. The fenced park has a well-shaded play area with playground equipment as well as benches and picnic tables. There’s even a little library where you can take a book or leave one at no cost.
A small local retail scene is complemented by dining options in Kenner
One of the few businesses in the neighborhood is Landscape Orleans. In business for over 10 years, the shop installs landscape lighting, creates garden virtual designs and offers monthly maintenance. The premium, full-service company works with residential and commercial clients to landscape or hardscape beautiful custom-designed spaces. It can work with you on installing artificial turf, outdoor kitchens and lighting and drainage systems. In nearby Kenner, dining options are endless. Redfish Pizza is known for its generous portions and reasonable prices as well as a commitment to quality. The business made Forbes magazine’s list of the most unique pizzas around the nation. It even makes its own line of sauces like gumbo, Mexican, or Jack Daniels wing sauce. If you stop by, try the muffuletta salad, chicken pesto panini or a Cajun fire pizza.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
