Harvard Estates
Neighborhood in Metairie, Louisiana
Jefferson Parish 70001
Brick ranch-style homes
The neighborhood's sidewalk-lined streets primarily feature brick ranch-style homes with hipped roofs. However, the community also has duplexes, condos and large apartment complexes. Nearly 85% of residents rent, and apartments comprise more than half of the neighborhood's property mix. The majority of single-family homes feature driveways with attached one-car garages. Homes usually price between $200,000 and $450,000. Size, age and renovations all play roles in sale prices. Condos, duplexes and townhouses top out around $150,000.Lafreniere Park has soccer fields and wildlife
Harvard Estates is only a short drive from one of the top parks in the New Orleans metropolitan area. Lafreniere Park is revered for its sprightly gardens and bird sanctuary and is a popular destination for community events. The sprawling park also features soccer fields, a walking path, picnic areas and a FIFA-certified professional soccer complex. Closer to home, members can swim or play tennis at Green Acres Country Club. Sailing, fishing and stand-up paddleboarding are all popular on Lake Pontchartrain. Many locals head to Bucktown Marina to stroll along the boardwalk and watch boats as they sail by. The East Bank Regional Library branch is inside the neighborhood, and the library has a variety of events, clubs and activities. "We have a lot of great music performances in our parking lot," Johnson says. "We have a popular cooking and cocktail class where a chef is paired with a bartender once a month. They cook a dish and make a drink after that to sample. We want creative expression to flourish." The library also has a "library of things," where patrons can rent out cooking equipment, tools, games, musical instruments and more. "You can check out KitchenAid stand mixers and kitchenware, things you might not be able to invest in." Community events are huge in Metairie, and Harvard Estates locals are welcome to all of them. Lafreniere Park comes alive during the annual Christmas in Lafreniere Park — a whimsical holiday light display featuring over 10 million LED lights that runs the whole month of December. Family Gras is another can't-miss event. Taking place every year during Mardi Gras, Family Gras offers various family-friendly activities over several days from parades to live musical performances.East Jefferson High offers college, career classes
The Jefferson Parish School District serves Harvard Estates students. Kids may attend Phoebe Hearst Elementary School, which earns a C-plus from Niche, before moving on to the B-minus-rated John Q. Adams Middle School. Teens can go to C-graded East Jefferson High School. The high school offers college and career readiness programs and has a competitive football team that won a state championship in 2013.Houses of worship in Metairie
Faith is an integral part of life in the area. "Southern Louisiana is very family and faith-oriented," Johnson says. "There are lots of Catholic churches, but Jefferson Parish is also the most diverse parish." Louisiana's Catholic heritage runs deep. It's the only state with parishes instead of counties, which reflects the French and Spanish Roman Catholic rule that once presided over Louisiana. Metairie also has Baptist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Evangelical and Episcopal churches, Jewish synagogues, Muslim masjids and a Hindu temple.Proximity to Lakeside Hospital, Ochsner Medical Complex
Sidewalks make it easy to get around, and there are a handful of Jefferson Parish Transit bus stops on Transcontinental Drive and Napoleon Avenue. But much like Metairie at large, Harvard Estates residents are often car dependent. "We're not a walkable parish, but it's a very drivable area. You can do a lot of things in a little bit of time," says Charlene Hale, a lifelong Metairie resident and director of partnerships and travel media for Visit Jefferson Parish. "You could be shopping in a mall or eating at a nice restaurant and then 20 minutes to a half hour later, you could be on a swamp tour." Interstate 10, which runs along the community's northern border, feeds directly into downtown New Orleans and leads to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, which sits 5 miles west. Spanning 24 miles, the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway is the world's longest bridge over water. It connects Jefferson Parish and St. Tammy Parish, so the bridge can experience heavy traffic. Lakeside Hospital, Ochsner Medical Complex and East Jefferson General Hospital are all within 3 miles of the neighborhood. Lakeside Hospital is the closest and offers emergency care within a mile of most homes. Ochsner Medical Complex is a new $115 million "super clinic" in Clearview City Center. Situated in a former Sears department store, the three-story facility now houses more than 20 primary and specialty care clinics, a drive-thru pharmacy, a lab and other outpatient services.Clearview City Center is getting redeveloped
Lakeside Shopping Center, the largest shopping mall in the New Orleans metropolitan area, is about 3 miles away and has more than 100 stores and restaurants. Clearview City Center is closer to home and has big-box stores like Target, restaurants, and a movie theater. The shopping mall is undergoing a $100 million redevelopment project to transform into a mixed-use development with luxury apartments anchored by Ochsner Medical Complex. Zuppardo's Family Market has groceries about a mile away. There are plenty of restaurants, too. Bobby Hebert's Cajun Cannon is a beloved game-day staple that serves up comforting Cajun fare. Tucked into a corner next to I-10, Spudly's Super Spuds is a casual dining spot that promises "a meal in a baked potato" with items like the "Super Duper," a baked potato loaded with crab, shrimp and crawfish topped with cheese sauce. Veterans Boulevard has chain restaurants and local franchises, including a branch of Cafe Du Monde, the iconic New Orleans café known for pillowy beignets and coffee made with chicory.Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River create flood risk
Sandwiched between Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River, the area has an increased risk of flooding. Hurricanes are also possible, although Johnson says the area fared well during Hurricane Katrina. "We have pumping systems and canals to help with flooding," he says. "When you live in southwest Louisiana, you live with water. It's our lifeblood and also our biggest fear."
