Entering the New Metairie neighborhood, you might be surprised to find what looks like a surfacing submarine in the middle of a grassy median. The thin metal shell is called the USS Metairie, the name proudly displayed on the structure’s faux conning tower. This local landmark disguises something rather ordinary: an air-release valve pit connected to a nearby drainage system. However, that seemingly mundane purpose didn’t stop the residents of New Metairie from making the structure into something memorable. Such community spirit is evident throughout this residential neighborhood, home to several schools and churches while remaining close to everyday essentials and major roadways.

“It’s a little hidden gem, a neat little pocket that’s convenient to everything. Being on the south side of Interstate 10 keeps it from being too congested traffic-wise,” says Realtor Re Re Avegno with Re/Max Affiliates. “It’s not an area people think of a lot unless they grew up here. A lot of young people come back when they want to buy their first home. There are great property values in the area, and good value for your money.”

Living in New Metairie almost lets residents step back in time. The bedroom community is filled with cottages and ranch-style houses from the 1960s and 1970s although you’ll find the odd Tudor, contemporary or custom-built home among the more traditional designs. Mature trees dot the area, and Cleary Playground invites both the young and old to enjoy the green space. The lawns are nicely kept, and prices range from $245,000 for a three-bedroom, two-bathroom ranch-style residence to $1 million for a four-bedroom, five-bathroom contemporary mansion.

Students in the area can choose between private, parochial or public education options. Joseph C. Moscona School opened in 1926 and has become one of the most diverse public middle schools in the state according to Niche. The National Blue Ribbon School educates children from prekindergarten through fifth grade and offers before and after-school care. St. Benilde School opened in 1968 and works with children from one year of age to the end of seventh grade. Students are encouraged to participate in activities like choir, Quiz Bowl and student council. Archbishop Rummel High School is one of the top 15 public high schools for athletes in Louisiana according to Niche. It offers dual enrollment with Southeastern Louisiana University and pre-professional programs like law or biomedical sciences.

New Metairie also has a few retail stores scattered along the streets. Causeway Pets has something for everyone no matter if it’s your first fish or if you need an equipment upgrade. The family-owned and operated shop has been in business for over 50 years and offers top-of-the-line aquariums and supplies as well as high-quality, healthy freshwater fish. Open six days a week, the knowledgeable staff can help you pick from live aquatic plants, feeder fish, pond stocking supplies and more.

Period Restoration is a full-service repair business specializing in antique furniture. It also makes custom furniture and museum-quality antique gilded frames with gold leafing and plaster. The craftsmen here carve, recast and refinish pieces that have been damaged by smoke or water and work with insurance companies to be sure your treasures are properly protected. Serving the Greater New Orleans area, the business has been a trusted part of the community for nearly 30 years.

If you’d like to visit the neighborhood watering hole, Whiskey Cowboy Saloon can be found just off of North Causeway Boulevard. The bar is open seven days a week, and guests can enjoy live music every Tuesday through Saturday as well as a few rounds of karaoke. There are also special deals throughout the week like ladies' night, steak night and taco Tuesdays in addition to weekday happy hours. If you find yourself hungry while enjoying the laid-back atmosphere, try the cowboy corn nuggets, pulled pork platter or Shephard’s pie.

New Metairie welcomes residents with friendly neighbors, multiple school choices and easy access to downtown New Orleans.
