Biscayne Highlands
Homes and homeowners moving upward
Most homes in Biscayne Highlands are single-family, ranch-style houses built in the 1950s that list for between $500,000 and $800,000. Many have a classic midcentury modern design, sometimes updated with high-end interiors and finishes, fenced backyards and large swimming pools. Mature trees and palms often grace the front yards of these simple dwellings. “A few years ago, the same properties would have listed for half their value today,” Urbina says, which is why many older homeowners have been selling and moving to other Florida localities or out of state where the cost of living is lower. “Many are workforce residents who have limited incomes. New homeowners are attracted to the home prices, and they value the upscale amenities.”Getting there by bus or by car
Miami-Dade Metrobuses rides through Biscayne Highlands on Northeast 6th and 12th avenues. Route 1-Biscayne Boulevard is about 1 mile to the east; it runs as far south as Key West. Interstate 95 is 3 miles away and runs north-south along the Florida coast, with Downtown Miami about 10 miles to the south. From Publix to local cafés
The closest supermarket is Publix in the Biscayne Commons shopping mall, a few blocks east of the neighborhood. Costco and Target are nearby, too. Local markets like Bravo or Sunshine 1 are just off West Dixie Highway, where many local restaurants are located, such as Sunnyside Café, a diner-like eatery specializing in breakfast and lunch. Residents also stop at Latin House Express Café & Grill, a small roadside spot serving Cuban foods and fruit milkshakes, or Caribbean Zone Restaurant & Bakery, a Haitian food place with big flavors and generous portions.Recreation with a bit of history
The Enchanted Forest Elaine Gordon Park, which borders Northeast 135th Street, offers residents a scenic place to hike, various species of subtropical plants to spot, pony rides and a petting zoo to enjoy, and 22 acres of lush parkland to explore. Across the railroad tracks, Arch Creek Park is another local hangout. This shaded enclave is the site of a natural limestone bridge formation that was once part of a historic Native American trail. The onsite museum features artifacts from pioneers and the now-extinct Tequesta tribe. Guided tours of the park and year-round educational programming are also available.Magnet programs that attract
The schools that serve Biscayne Highlands all received Cs from Niche. They include North Miami Elementary, which features on-demand teacher help for students who need extra assistance with English, math and science. North Miami Middle School offers museum, International Baccalaureate and communications magnet programs. At North Miami Senior High, students can choose from several magnet programs, such as engineering, culinary arts, finance, and health sciences and firefighting.Over 100 craft brews in one place
What started as a project led by FIU hospitality students has become North Miami BrewFest, a one-day annual event at NoMi Village, an arts and entertainment venue between the 441 and Interstate 95, featuring some of the best breweries in South Florida. Attendees can sample over 100 craft brews and pair them with gourmet food creations from local restaurants, which is included in the ticket price. General admission to the event in 2023 was $75 per person.
