A variety of homes with Mediterranean Revival influences on large lots
Influences of the Mediterranean Revival style is seen throughout the neighborhood. Decorative facades and fountains are common features among the oldest homes. It’s common to see terra cotta roofs gracing ranch-style homes. “It’s not the newest part of Coral Gables; most of the homes were built between the 1940s and 1960s,” says Belinda Sime, owner of Sime Realty Corporation and a Realtor who has sold several homes in the neighborhood. The teardown trend has hit the neighborhood, but the rebuilds going up tend to mirror the styles of existing architecture. “The city makes the homeowners add some sort of character,” Sime says.Because the neighborhood is home to two exclusive country clubs, golf course homes are an attractive option. Three-bedroom homes typically range from $1 million to $3.5 million. Larger homes from $4 million to $8.5 million. Waterfront homes start at $15 million. Luxury townhomes designed in the Mediterranean Revival style are a new addition. They list for more than $6 million. Prospective homebuyers should be aware that the neighborhood's location puts it at risk of flooding and wind damage, especially during hurricane season.
The Shops at Merrick Park, Miracle Mile within 2 miles
The Shops at Merrick Park, anchored by Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, offers several upscale shopping and dining options less than 2 miles from the neighborhood. Nearby Shadow Wagyu is a high-end butcher shop that doubles as a restaurant. The eatery eschews publicity but is well known for its burgers. Another favorite is Bouchon Bistro, a French-inspired eatery housed in the former La Palma Hotel. It is located near the Miracle Mile shopping district in the heart of downtown Coral Gables, also less than 2 miles from the neighborhood. Close to home, residents can enjoy an elegant but relaxing meal at Biltmore’s Fontana Restaurant. Publix is nearby.Venetian Pool is a popular gathering place on the National Register of Historic Places
The Venetian Pool is a popular gathering place that is open to the public for much of the year. Visitors can swim amid grottos and waterfalls in clear waters fed by an underground aquifer and replenished daily. Golfers can join the Biltmore Resort or Riviera Country Club for access to 18 holes of golf and other recreational amenities. Ruth Bryan Owen Waterway Park provides a convenient natural space along a canal that runs through the neighborhood. Key Biscayne Bay is about 4 miles away, offering activities for boaters, watercraft enthusiasts and those who want to enjoy waterfront green spaces such as David T. Kennedy Park.Highly rated public and private school options
Public school options include Coral Gables Preparatory Academy, a pre-K-8 school, and Coral Gables Senior High, an International Baccalaureate school. Both are rated A-minus by Niche. Ransom Everglades High School is a nearby institution that is rated as one of Florida’s best private schools.
Baptist Health Doctors Hospital, Miami International Airport are easily accessible
Baptist Health Doctors Hospital on the University of Miami Campus is just south of the neighborhood. “A lot of professors live in the neighborhood,” Sime says. “And a lot of families come from the northeast, like New York, to live close to UM while their kids attend school there. Then they sell the homes for a nice profit.” The neighborhood also is conveniently located to Miami International Airport 6 miles north. “It’s a good spot for people who travel a lot for business,” Sime says. “They don’t have to cross over U.S. 1.” Residents can catch the bus along Bird Road and take the commuter train from the nearby Douglas Road Metrorail station. It’s only 5 miles from the station to the Brickell Financial District and downtown Miami.
