Little Havana’s next-door neighbor
Mingling scents of guava pastries and woodsy cigars are commonplace in the small community of Flagler, a neighborhood that sits at the edge of Miami’s Little Havana, along a curving stretch of Ponce de Leon Boulevard. "The biggest thing is the food. The mom-and-pop shops have so much Latin flair, and the restaurants are absolutely to die for," says Arleen Davis-Slagle, Realtor CIPS with Realty Home Advisors International. Historic buildings in the area, such as the Spanish Mission-style Wesley Hispanic United Methodist Church, founded in the 1940s as Miami’s first bilingual United Methodist Church, chronicle the past and showcase the area's prominent Spanish architectural style. The neighborhood is close to the Magic City Casino, a prominent Las Vegas-style venue that hosts musical performances and Jai-Alai tournaments, and commercial corridors like Tamiami Trail. Shaped by a combination of Hispanic and Cuban roots, Flagler has become a vibrant neighborhood where authentic cuisine and culture are celebrated daily.

Authentic Cuban cuisine is at Versailles
Flagler sits in one of the richest culinary corners of the city, with options ranging from walk-up taco stands to cozy Italian eateries to some of the best Cuban fare in the city. Most restaurants are concentrated along West Flagler Street and Tamiami Trail. Since 1971, Versailles Restaurant has been a mainstay in the Cuban community, offering authentic dishes, outdoor seating and even a bakery. La Casita and La Carreta are also popular stops for Cubanos and plantains, while Jacalito is a go-to for traditional Mexican fare. Plaza de Leon is home to a Publix Super Market, easily accessible via the free Coral Gables trolley. Sedano’s Supermarket and nearby Presidente Supermarket offer imported items not often found in mainstream stores, making it easy for residents to find traditional Cuban, Spanish and Mexican ingredients.

Celebrating Latin culture at the Calle Ocho Music Festival
This neighborhood is on the western edge of Little Havana, giving residents a front-row seat to some of Miami’s best Cuban cultural experiences. The Calle Ocho Music Festival returns in March during the eight-week Carnaval Miami event. Every December, the artist collective at Futurama 1637 Art Building organizes the Umbrellas of Little Havana Art Festival. And throughout the year, residents can catch Spanish-language performances at the Teatro Trail, also known as the Trail Theater.
Flagler is full of Spanish Revival-style architecture
Most single-family homes here feature Spanish Revival or Mission-style elements such as rich terra cotta tile roofs that cover smooth beige stucco siding, a trend that Davis-Slagle says was heightened by the influx of Latin American and Cuban immigrants in the 20th century and "spread across South Florida like wildfire." Arched entrances are not uncommon, adding to the elegant appeal. Not all of these 1940s homes have driveways, so some street parking is necessary. Wide sidewalks are found just about everywhere, making the neighborhood extremely walkable. The area is also known for housing multigenerational families, which Davis-Slagle says is not uncommon for Coral Gables in general. “You’ll see kids, mother, father, grandmother, all residing under one roof.” Those homes are also often passed down to the next generation because people stay in the community longer, she says. Depending on size and renovations, homes can range in price from $600,000 to nearly $1 million, and the median sits at about $819,000.

Rotary Park has a playground
Rotary Park’s shaded playscape is a welcome reprieve from the bright Florida sun. Located right off Ponce de Leon, it serves as Flagler’s primary community green space with a landscaped lawn and benches outside the fenced playground. Dogs aren’t allowed here, but owners will find a quaint off-leash area in Blanche Park about 3 miles away. Bayfront Park in downtown Miami is about 5 miles away, and it’s an additional 5 miles across the bridge to South Beach.
