Life in The Shores
The Village of Miami Shores, locally known as The Shores, is an established Miami suburb that has a habit of bringing former residents right back. “It’s the story here for a lot of people,” says Brendaliz Goldstein, a local Realtor and former Miami Shores resident. “They grow up here or test the waters for a couple years and then move away. Later, when it’s time to raise kids, they remember how they grew up and move back.” Many factors contribute to Miami Shores’ family-oriented environment, from large lots and big houses to consistent community events and excellent schools. It’s a community where people sit out on the front porch and greet folks walking their dogs or biking with their families, Goldstein says. It’s where weekends mean kids play in the front yard while meat smokes on the grill in the back. Named Miami Shores for its spot right on the shores of the Biscayne Bay, this community is a scenic waterfront blend of old-school Florida charm and suburban tranquility.

Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival and more old-school styles
Between the community’s mature banyan and oak trees is an array of beautifully maintained, old-construction homes. Architectural styles include the eye-catching Art Deco, grand Mediterranean Revival and elegant midcentury modern styles. “Everything is just eye candy,” Goldstein says. “Since COVID, people have been renovating a lot, so there are more boxy modern homes, too.” List prices for single-family homes in Miami Shores range from $470,000 to $8.9 million. This range covers everything from three-bedroom, one-bathroom ranch-style homes on 5,000-square-foot lots to seven-bedroom, five-bathroom mansions on a little less than a half-acre. Miami Shores has townhouses and condos as well. Multifamily homes range from $379,000 to $670,000.

Miami Country Day School
Miami Shores has public and private school options. The village is served by Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Students can embark on their academic career at Miami Shores Elementary, rated B on Niche. Horace Mann Middle, rated C-plus, is the next stop before Miami Edison Senior High, rated B-minus. Alternatively, many students go the private route and attend Miami Country Day School, a K-12 school with an A-plus rating. Its upper school ranked No. 2 on Niche’s list of Miami-Dade County’s best private high schools. “Kids as far as Fort Lauderdale ride buses down here for that school,” Goldstein says. “It’s really just an amazing school. My daughter goes there with Tomy Brady’s kids and Shakira’s kids.” Miami Country Day School features state-of-the-art facilities, such as the Garner Center for Innovation, an academic tech space equipped with 3D printers, virtual reality gear and more.

Miami Shores Country Club
Pocket parks can be found throughout the community, like Optimist Park, where locals relax under the shade of mature oaks or shop for fresh produce at The Shores Sunday Market, a weekly farmers, artisan and community market. Military Trail Park is another leafy enclave and a popular stop on dog walks. The dog park in front of the Miami Shores Aquatic Center is another popular spot for those with four-legged friends. Residents who don’t live on the shore can enjoy waterfront views at Miami Shores Bayfront Park, a linear green space along the Biscayne Bay. Miami Shores Country Club hugs the Biscayne Canal on the community’s north side. Its 18-hole, par-71 golf course has drawn in members since 1939, but these days, its pickleball courts are the headliner.

“So many opportunities to get involved”
The Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce hosts an annual Green Day, transforming Northeast 2nd Avenue into a celebration of all things green, featuring food trucks, vendors and live music. “There are so many opportunities to get involved with the community,” Goldstein says. “I loved everything they do for kids because I’m a mom now. You go to one thing, then another. Then faces are familiar, and suddenly, you’re good friends with neighbors.” Marshmallow Drop is a favorite among Miami Shores kids. Every year, on the Saturday before Easter, a helicopter drops 10,000 marshmallows over the Miami Shores Recreation Fields. Children scramble to gather as many as possible to exchange them for a bag full of goodies.

Aldi and Publix are the village's go-tos for grocery shopping. Sabor Tropical Supermarket and Marky’s Gourmet are nearby for more niche ingredients. Small commercial centers are on either side of Northeast 2nd Avenue, with a handful of familiar favorites, from Starbucks to Pura Vida, a Florida health-food chain. Tinta y Cafe is a smaller Florida chain that serves Cuban cuisine and coffee. It has a spot on the Michelin Guide for its good quality and good value cooking.
Many Miami Shores residents enjoy heading to NE 2nd St for a meal at one of the many eateries.
