Central Florida bedroom community where vacation living is the norm
Like many communities in Central Florida, Micco was born as a stop on the Florida East Coast Railroad in the late 1800s. Over the years, it has evolved from a major fishing hub, thanks to its location on the Indian River, to a tourist destination. Today, it is a laid-back community of about 9,000 snowbirds, retirees and those looking for vacation living year-round. “It's a true bedroom community, focused on leisure activities,” says Michelle Carey, a Realtor with Dale Sorensen Real Estate who sells and lives in nearby Deer Run. “It really has a relaxed vibe.” While Micco might look like it’s out in the middle of nowhere, its location next to the city of Sebastian gives residents easy access to shopping, dining and other conveniences.
Manufactured homes in Barefoot Bay and other communities, single family homes on the south side
Most of Micco’s north side is comprised of manufactured home communities. Barefoot Bay is the largest and offers amenities like pools, golf course and regular activities. Snug Harbor is dedicated to residents 55 years and older and features a clubhouse with a pool and a bocce court. On Micco’s southern end, midcentury-era ranch and 2000s-era new traditional homes sit on spacious lawns dotted with palm trees. Homes on the river feature big backyards and long boat docks. The median price for manufactured and single-family homes is about $285,000. Those looking for a home with less upkeep can find a small selection of two-bedroom condos near Route 1 with an average price of about $140,000.
The Indian River is a draw for anglers and boaters, Micco Park offers green space
Micco’s proximity to the Indian River is a big draw for many residents. Boat ramps are available, and marinas near Route 1 provide places to store boats for residents without backyard docks. Carey says residents enjoy spending time at the Sebastian Inlet, especially those with small children or grandchildren. “There's a tidepool that's a big hit with the kids. You can find small sea creatures and sometimes spot dolphins and manatees,” she says. “And there's great fishing along the sides of the Inlet.”
Micco Park offers green space, tennis and basketball courts, a picnic pavilion and a playground. The South Mainland Community Center offers a covered playground and an indoor pickleball court. Golfers tee off at Barefoot Bay Golf Course. Residents of the Barefoot Bay community have access to community pools, tennis courts and a recreation center. The sandy coastline of Barefoot Bay Beach is just across the river by boat and about 23 miles away by car.
Kids attend Brevard Public Schools, which offers school choice
Brevard Public Schools serves the community and rates a B-plus on Niche. The district encompasses 84 schools and offers school choice. Saint Joseph Catholic School in Palm Bay is the closest private school. It rates an A-plus on Niche and serves prekindergarten through eighth grade.
Groceries and essentials within the community, more shopping in nearby Sebastian
Shopping is limited within the community, though residents can pick up groceries at Winn-Dixie off Barefoot Boulevard or take Route 1 to Sebastian to shop at big box stores like Walmart and Home Depot. There are a few locally owned restaurants, most near Route 1. The closest medical center is Orlando Health Sebastian River Hospital, about 3 miles away.
The Barefoot by the Lake Music Art & Food Festival is a popular annual event
Residents gather for the annual Barefoot by the Lake Music Art & Food Festival, which takes place each February. The two-day event includes vendors, live music and a “kid zone” with face painting, an obstacle course and other family-friendly activities.
The county keeps residents updated about hurricanes
Due to its location near the coast, Micco is susceptible to hurricane damage and flooding. Tornadoes are also possible. Brevard County’s website offers information and other resources to prepare residents for major storms.

Route 1, I-95 keep residents moving
Route 1 runs along the community’s east side and connects to the rest of South Florida. Interstate 95 is accessible via Micco Road and leads to Orlando, about 86 miles away and West Palm Beach, about 100 miles away. The Melbourne Orlando International Airport is about 20 miles away.
