Fast-growing rural community

Like other Treasure Valley cities, Middleton is a rapidly growing city that offers a quiet and somewhat isolated lifestyle. “I like that it’s still rural and a farming community,” says Michelle Stoddard, longtime Middleton resident. “Most people would think it’s in the middle of nowhere, but you’re about 5 to 10 minutes from the highway and other amenities. You still have the small town feel with elbow room.” According to the US Census, Middleton experienced a 16% population growth from 2020 to 2023. Now, the city has over 11,000 residents. It’s mostly a bedroom community that has modest homes and basic amenities. Most Middleton residents are commuters or work remotely. Some major employers are in Boise, like Micron Technology.

Higher prices compared to Caldwell and Boise

Homes in Middleton tend to cost more than other cities in the Treasure Valley. The median price for a single-family home is $535,000, which is $20,000 more than Boise and $132,000 more than Caldwell. “Most of the farms have turned into developments; all they do is build houses,” Stoddard says. “We used to be a one-stoplight town. The growth has come, but there hasn’t been much infrastructure.” Newly constructed homes built in the 2020s are common, especially on the city’s north side. These are usually craftsman ranch-style houses or two-story modern homes. Older properties, including ranch-style and manufactured homes with large front yards, are concentrated near Main Street. Streets are walkable – for humans and animals. “Sometimes, you can see a four-wheeler down the road,” Stoddard says. “It’s not uncommon to see someone riding a horse on the side of the road.”

Hometown restaurants along Main Street

Middleton has few restaurants; most are along Main Street and Middleton Road. Diners can find locally owned Mexican and American restaurants and bars, and a handful of chain restaurants. Ridley’s Family Market is the city’s main grocery store, and on the third Saturday of every summer month is Middleton Market, the city’s farmers market. Nearby cities like Caldwell (7 miles away) and Nampa (11 miles away) have more shopping and dining options; Caldwell’s downtown is more walkable and has more diverse restaurant options. Caldwell is also considered one of the best wine spots in Treasure Valley. The Village at Meridian is the region’s shopping mall, with over 50 stores in a Mediterranean-influenced outdoor mall. This mall is 19 miles away.

Water fights at the Fourth of July celebration

Middleton events reflect the area’s small-town feel. Community members gather for the Middleton 4th of July celebration, which has activities all day, including a parade, an artisan market and plenty of food. The day ends with a fireworks display. “At the Fourth of July parade, we do a water fight, and people go all out,” Stoddard says. “They have a whole wet zone.” Every year, a massive herd of sheep crosses through the community, led by ranchers, as the herd moves into a more elevated area for the summer. It’s usually more than 2,000 sheep at once. “There’s a Facebook group that tells the community when the sheep are coming, and I watch them from my house,” Stoddard says.

Plenty of water activities at Lake Lowell

Middleton operates a small number of parks, varying from pocket parks with a bench to larger areas with multiple amenities. Middleton Place Park has athletic courts and a sledding hill, while Piccadilly Park is a skate park. Piccadilly Park had new renovations, including a zipline, splash pad and an amphitheater. Golfers can head to Caldwell for its two public courses. Residents may also head off to Bureau Land Management sites to practice target shooting or horseback riding. Eagle Island State Park is less than 15 miles away. Summertime is the park’s most popular time. Folks can enjoy water activities like paddling and swimming or stay on land through its disc golf course and hiking trails. Lake Lowell Park is another park that’s 15 miles south. Locals can also enjoy some boating and swimming. The location next to the Deer Flat National Refuge also provides hunting opportunities. Bogus Basin is the nearest ski resort that’s 40 miles away.

Slight dip in crime in 2023

According to the Idaho State Police 2023 Crime Report, the Middleton Police Department had a 1% decrease in crime from 2022 to 2023. Middleton’s crime rate has been trending up for the past five years; however, the city’s crime rate is 25% lower than the state’s. Middleton gets all four seasons. “We get a few inches of snow but not a ton. Our spring is short, and it lasts a month. We get a week or two in summer when we’re above 100 degrees,” Stoddard says. “Our fall season lasts a week, and then one week later, we get colder temperatures.”
