Stonefield
Late-20th-century homes with surplus square footage
Wide streets curve through the neighborhood along a meandering slope, lined by sidewalks and dotted with trees and streetlamps to either side. Homes here sit behind tidy lawns on half-acre lots, providing just enough room to stretch out between properties and do some modest landscaping. Most homes were built between the 1980s and ‘90s, with styles ranging from brick-and-vinyl New Traditional homes stately Colonial Revivals and contemporary houses with asymmetrical roofs. Homes tend to run on the spacious side with 2,000 to 4,000 square feet and are priced from roughly $500,000 to $1 million. There are also a handful of condos next to Stonefield Park, which list between $560,000 and $610,000.Young students walk to class at Elm Lawn Elementary
The Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District is ranked as the best public school district in the Madison area by Niche. Elm Lawn Elementary is located in the neighborhood, a short walk from most homes. It has an active Parent Teacher Organization that hosts events for students and families, from a homecoming parade to an end-of-year hot dog picnic. Also nearby is Kromrey Middle and Middleton High, which Niche considers the best public middle and high school in the region. All three schools score an A rating or above from Niche.Neighborhood events and after-school fun at Stonefield Park
Sidewalks connect homes to Stonefield Park, a 2-acre green space with a couple of tennis courts, a sand volleyball pit and a playground. It’s the primary place to stay active and also happens to be where the Stonefield Neighborhood Association hosts its events. “We have a big Fourth of July celebration with a bike parade ending at the park with games and activities for kids,” Weiss says. “We also do Fall Frolic, which is a cul-de-sac party. We have several cul-de-sacs in our neighborhood, so we’ll have social gatherings with a fire and some wine and beer.” Alongside other holiday celebrations and seasonal events, small social clubs often spring up around the neighborhood for residents to unite over shared interests such as reading, card games or riding bikes.Explore Downtown Middleton or celebrate birthdays at the Nitty Gritty
About a mile north is Middleton’s recently thriving downtown area, a small yet dynamic stretch of locally owned restaurants, eclectic boutiques and laidback hangout spots. “For as small as downtown is — it’s maybe a six- to eight-block area — there’s a lot of nice new things to do there,” Weiss says. He adds that Italian eatery Villa Dolce and the Free House Pub, with its casual setting and free-flowing craft brews, are a couple of his favorite downtown stops. Within the neighborhood is the Nitty Gritty, the self-proclaimed “official birthday place” where locals celebrate with burgers and beer. On their special day, patrons are invited to ring the birthday bell and get to take home a souvenir mug.Grab groceries along University Avenue or head into Madison
University Avenue runs through Downtown Middleton and puts residents roughly a mile away from the nearest grocery store, Willy Street Co-op. The thoroughfare is also the fastest way to get to Downtown Madison, which is about 5.5 miles east. Both the University of Wisconsin-Madison and its hospital system are along the way. Although Stonefield is largely considered car-dependent, Metro Transit bus stops along Gammon Road offer a ride into Madison. Dane County Regional Airport lies directly across Lake Mendota, approximately 12 miles northeast.
