South Middletown offers waterfront recreation and historic homes
The Great Miami River Trail has attracted thousands of cyclists and long-distance runners since the first 8 miles were paved in 1976. Today, it spans more than 90 miles across five counties and through various communities, including Middletown, Ohio, and the smaller neighborhood of South Middletown. Here, World War I-era single-family homes border the water, and Mighty Middies fans support the team at Barnitz Stadium during football season. Residents live within a few blocks of the city’s historic downtown, which is in the midst of a resurgence after several decades of economic instability. “I feel like Middletown is truly in the middle of a renaissance,” says Cari Hillman, community engagement director at the MidPointe Public Library, adding, “It has a rich history that people are very proud of, and I can’t say enough good things about the families here.”
Various home styles from the 19th and 20th century in South Middletown
South Middletown’s oldest homes date back to the late 1800s. There’s a mix of Victorians, Italianates and restored cottages with decorative trim on the outskirts of downtown. Prices typically fall between $200,000 and $330,000, although single-family homes divided into rental units can sell for upwards of $500,000. Smaller, early 20th-century bungalows and midcentury ranch-style houses are farther south near Barnitz Stadium. Many of these are classified as investment properties, and they are priced between $70,000 and $150,000. Lots are relatively compact, and cars park in narrow driveways, on the street or in detached garages.
Students participate in partnership with Miami University Middletown
Kids can enroll in the Middletown City School District, where Rosa Parks Elementary (a short walk away for many), Highview 6th Grade Center and Middletown Middle all earn C-minus grades from Niche. Middletown High School, the alma mater of Vice President JD Vance, has a C grade and partners with Miami University Middletown to offer two- and four-year degrees through the Miami Middletown Rising program. “Teachers and superintendents are very visible in the community,” says Hillman, describing the “friendly” and “tight-knit” feel at football games and downtown parades. There’s also a variety of educational resources available at the MidPointe Library.
People enjoy the Great Miami River Trail, local parks and a country club
One of South Middletown’s most popular features is the Great Miami River Trail, which borders the river to the west. “They’re really working on revitalization efforts by the trail,” says Hillman. “It’s a wonderful place to walk and observe the wildlife.” Old South Park, which has basketball courts and a playground, is located closer to downtown to the north, and there’s also Barnitz Park across the street from Rosa Parks Elementary. It features baseball diamonds, picnic tables and plenty of open field space. Forest Hills Country Club members can join golf leagues, swim laps at the Olympic-size pool or order Mediterranean-inspired dishes at the onsite bistro.
A growing restaurant scene within walking distance of South Middletown
According to Hillman, Middletown has become a restaurant hub in Southwest Ohio. “There are so many great places to eat in Middletown,” she says, highlighting Tripple Moon for coffee and breakfast and Desi Swad, a relatively new destination for authentic Indian food. Most businesses are concentrated on Main Street and Central Avenue downtown, just a few blocks, or about a 10-minute walk, from South Middletown. There’s live music at the Sorg Opera House, which first opened in 1891, and it’s common for visitors to wander into the Swire Inn for dinner after a show. For groceries, Needler’s Fresh Market is about 2 miles from the neighborhood, and there are several big-box options along Roosevelt Boulevard.
Annual events downtown, the Ohio Challenge in Smith Park and Middletown’s nightlife scene
Downtown Middle Town, Inc. (DMI) has invested in the city’s historic downtown. Popular annual events include the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, First Fridays, when local businesses stay open late, and the Ohio Challenge in Smith Park, a weekend of hot air balloon rides, food trucks and vintage car shows. Hillman also points to the city’s growing nightlife scene. Breweries like N.E.W. Ales and White Dog Distilling Co & Bourbon Bar host local musicians, trivia nights and more.
Public buses and Interstate 75 take commuters to larger cities
With the exception of cyclists and joggers along the Great Miami River Trail, there’s very little through traffic in South Middletown. Four Butler County RTA routes service the community. There are regular bus stops along Main Street and Minnesota Street in South Middletown, and larger cities like Dayton and Cincinnati are both within an hour via Interstate 75. The CincyLink express bus visits the Middletown Meijer on its way down the interstate. The nearest hospital is Atrium Medical Center, a major local employer, and the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is the go-to for commercial flights.
