The neighborhood is dominated by midcentury cottages, Craftsman-inspired houses, and single-story and raised ranch-style homes. Subdivisions have homes built between the 1980s and '90s, including Colonial Revival, split-level, midcentury modern and ranch-style homes. Kids may attend Miller Ridge Elementary School, which receives a C-plus from Niche, or Wildwood Elementary School, rated C. Sixth graders attend Highview Sixth Grade Center, rated C-minus. Middletown Middle School also receives a C-minus, while Middletown High School is rated C. Most homes are within a mile or two of the schools. High schoolers can earn college credit at no cost through the College Credit Plus program. Part of Middletown’s appeal is its proximity to the Dayton and Cincinnati metropolitan areas. “Sometimes we’ll go to Dayton for dinner or we’ll go to Cincinnati and see concerts or go to a Bengals game,” Hart says. Drivers can reach Dayton and Dayton International Airport within 40 minutes, while Cincinnati and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport are about an hour away. Some, but not all, streets in Springhill have sidewalks. Butler County Regional Transit Authority bus stops are scattered throughout the area, but most people rely on cars to get around. Major thoroughfares include University Boulevard, Route 73/Verity Parkway and Interstate 75. Kettering Health Middletown is the closest hospital, about 6 miles away. The area is highly residential, but restaurants are within a five-minute drive. Needler’s Fresh Market is the closest full-service grocery store, but many residents stop at drive-thru convenience stores like University Drive-Thru and University Express to grab snacks, drinks and beer. Springhill is five minutes from Bourbon’s Craft Kitchen and Bar, one of Middletown’s most popular spots for dinner and drinks with a lengthy list of bourbons and rotating seasonal specials. “Bourbon’s is always packed and we even get people from Cincinnati,” Hart says. “I’ve never gone there and seen it empty.” Burgers and baked potatoes are menu highlights at Broken Barrel Bar and Grill, while Brent’s Smokin’ Butts and Grill is a laid-back spot for barbecue. “We’re getting a Chick-fil-A and everyone’s very excited about it,” he says.While shops and restaurants are limited within the neighborhood’s boundaries, several houses of worship are nearby, including Protestant and nondenominational churches.
