Beckland Terrace
Spend summers at Doug Russell Aquatic Center
The Doug Russell Aquatic Center is a summer destination for the entire city. It features waterslides, splash zones, a lap pool and a kid-friendly obstacle course. Picnic tables are plentiful, and a full-service pool house is on site. A block away, a paved walking path runs parallel to Storey Avenue for just under 2 miles, connecting walkers with nearby Lancaster Park. Its shaded playground was renovated in 2021 to resemble a medieval castle bordered by tall trees. A swing set, a picnic area and a large field surround the playscape, and there’s a soccer field around the corner on Alpine Street. Scharbauer Sports Complex is the city’s athletics hub, often hosting local high school teams on its many fields. The spacious Momentum Bank Ballpark also accommodates the RockHounds, the Double-A affiliate for Major League Baseball’s Oakland Athletics.Midcentury ranch-style homes are typical in Beckland Terrace
Most of Beckland Terrace is filled with brick midcentury ranch-style properties, their simple and warm facades shaded by trees. Narrow sidewalks line the roads, and the occasional flagpole rises above the rooftops. Front-gable entrances with covered porches are common, as are driveways and garages. With a median price of $250,000, these homes are significantly below the Midland metro area average, although they don’t hit the market often. “A lot of the people are retired,” says Myrna Cruz, a Realtor with Zurc Properties LLC, who’s been selling in the area for six years. “They’ve been living there forever.” She notes that the area sits in the center of a rental-heavy zip code but doesn’t see many rentals. These three-bedroom homes are usually priced between $150,000 and $300,000.Legacy High helps students prepare for college, a career or the military
Bonham Elementary receives a grade of B-minus on Niche and serves kindergarten through sixth grade students. C-rated Alamo Junior High serves seventh through eighth grade students. Midland Legacy High, which scores a B-minus, offers a College, Career and Military Readiness program, creating an individual roadmap for graduating students. The school is split between two campuses, one for ninth grade and another for tenth through 12th grade. Legacy Senior High campus also offers a competitive Air Force Junior ROTC program and multiple Industry-Based Certification courses. Following a referendum passed in early 2024, the city plans to build a new Legacy High School in the coming years that will house all four grades. Charter options include Richard Milburn Academy, or RMA Midland, a C-minus-rated high school that shares a building with Alamo Heights Baptist Church and offers credit recovery programs and career and technical education opportunities. Nearby private school options include A-minus-rated Midland Christian School, which enrolls kindergarten through 12th grade students, and the K-6 Midland Montessori School.Restaurants and shops line Midland Drive
Shopping centers are common along Midland Drive, making it easy for residents to reach pharmacies, banks and restaurants. Micaela’s Burritos is “one of the best burrito places in town,” Cruz says, adding that the Baby Mango Snack Bar, another favorite, is a few doors down. Locals say that Back In The Day Café, a classic diner with walls decorated to resemble a small-town street, is packed during peak hours. Across the street, the Westwood Village shopping center is home to Family Dollar, multiple fitness centers and the local Goodwill thrift store. The H-E-B of Andrews Highway is the closest grocery store, and Sam’s Club is next door.Midland’s mighty event schedule
Midland’s event schedule is mighty for a small city. “The city is always having concerts, events, vegetable markets, stuff like that,” Farrow says. Annual traditions include rodeos, arts festivals and performances such as Tall City Blues Fest, a September music festival held at a local venue called The Destination. In summer, the community gathers at Centennial Park for the Star-Spangled Salute, which features a Fourth of July parade and fireworks show. The Loop connects drivers with I-20
Aside from a few dedicated walking paths, Midland is best navigated by car or bus. State Route 250, or The Loop, is one of the city’s main roads. It curves around the community to connect with Interstate 20, which stretches across nearly the entire state of Texas and brings drivers to Odessa in about 20 miles. The Midland Odessa Urban Transit District, whose buses are known to locals as EZ-Rider, services both cities. The 5-mile trip to downtown Midland takes about half an hour by bus. The Midland International Air and Space Port is about 8 miles away.
