Fannin Terrace
Renovating midcentury ranch-style homes to their former glory
Most of Fannin Terrace’s ranch-style homes were built in the 1960s and 1970s. Shaded, sidewalk-lined streets give way to wide driveways and two-car garages, and many lots are large enough to accommodate a backyard pool. But the area’s recent reputation as the “New Old Midland” has led to a slightly changing landscape. “The houses are nicer because they’ve been updated,” Farrow says, explaining that, in addition to interior renovations, a few original homes have been replaced by new construction that stands out for its raised ranch style. “You’ve got little houses and then these big ones that are kind of towering over their heads,” she says. It’s not surprising that these improvements have influenced home prices. While investors can still find a few properties for around $215,000, most three-bedroom homes range from $300,000 to $400,000, and home values are steadily rising.College and career opportunities abound in Midland ISD
Fannin Elementary, within walking distance for many residents, receives a B-minus from Niche. C-plus-rated San Jacinto Junior High has served the community for more than 70 years. Midland High, also rated C-plus, is currently split between two campuses, one for ninth graders and another for tenth through 12th grade students. Following a referendum passed in early 2024, the city revealed its plans to build a new high school in the coming years to house all four grades. As part of Midland Independent School District, students can enroll in career programs such as the Fire Academy, which culminates in a firefighter certification, or the Air Force JROTC. Private school options include A-minus-rated Midland Christian School and A-plus-rated Trinity School of Midland. Some students may also enroll in the tuition-free Early College High School at Midland College, which allows teens to graduate with an associate degree.Accessible play at Inspiration Park
Besides the small playgrounds at the local elementary school and neighboring church, the adjoined Windlands and Tumbleweed parks are the closest green spaces, just over a mile away. This 60-plus acre expanse features the Windlands Park Disc Golf Course, looping natural trails, baseball fields and a soccer complex. The park also has a small xeriscape garden showcasing native and drought-tolerant plants. There’s also a colorful playground and an outdoor fitness station. Across the street, local nonprofit Spectrum of Solutions recently unveiled Inspiration Park, an accessible playscape for children of all abilities. COM Aquatics, an aquatic fitness organization with multiple indoor pools and programs for children and adults, is a few blocks away.Local dining off Wadley Avenue
West Wadley Avenue is the area’s main road and supports most local shopping and dining options, including favorites such as Ray’s Italian Bistro. This local pizza joint sits across the street from T&T Donuts, beloved for their donut holes — affectionately nicknamed “Yumbos.” The Plaza Oaks shopping center is home to Venezia, a high-end Italian eatery that’s been open since 1988. Mulberry Café satisfies morning caffeine cravings, while The Patio Drafthouse attracts diners for its sampling of handcrafted cocktails and local beers. For groceries, shoppers can visit the Natural Foods Market or head to the H-E-B off North Midkiff Road. Midland Park Mall and department stores like Target and Walmart sit just off state Route 250, about 2 miles away.Citywide celebrations in downtown Midland
Midland College’s Al G. Langford Chaparral Center hosts community events such as concerts, book signings and holiday evenings with Santa Claus. Most citywide events occur near Centennial Park in downtown Midland, including the annual Fourth of July celebration Star-Spangled Salute, outdoor concerts and a seasonal farmers market.Midland to Odessa via EZ-Connect
State Route 250, known to locals as The Loop, circles the city. It connects drivers to Interstate 20, which leads to the Midland International Air & Space Port in 10 miles and Odessa in 20 miles. The Midland Odessa Urban Transit District services both cities with the EZ-Connect bus, offering a direct route to Odessa from Midland’s Downtown Transfer Plaza. Local EZ-Rider buses also stop along major roads such as Wadley Avenue, and the 4-mile ride to downtown Midland takes about 30 minutes.
