A suburban community neighboring Midland College
Goddard Heights's classic suburban appeal is enhanced by its proximity to local schools, major roadways and longstanding restaurants. The community is located across the street from Midland College, which serves as the city’s primary community college and supports multiple academies for younger students. The local elementary and middle schools are within walking distance, and plenty of popular restaurants and shops are along West Wadley Avenue. However, locals say that what makes this neighborhood truly special is its residents. “People are very interpersonal. They want to get to know you. They want to grow with you,” says neighborhood resident and West Texas native Tim Lester, Realtor with Tortuga Real Estate at Keller Williams. Annual block parties are common here, and neighbors often meet in downtown Midland for other community events or story time at the nearby Midland County Centennial Library. Despite the neighborhood’s location near Midland Airpark, Lester says aviation traffic is light, and noise isn’t usually an issue.

Several homes were designed by Laura Bush’s father, Harold Welch
Homes in Goddard Heights line a series of cul-de-sacs, some connected by alleyways and sidewalks that make the neighborhood particularly walkable. “There’s a ton of people always walking around or walking dogs,” Lester says. A stroll through the neighborhood reveals a variety of ranch-style homes that take up most of their compact lots, leaving just enough room for a small backyard pool. Some homes feature grand curved driveways and garages, most of which are accessible through rear alleyways. Many of these properties were built during the city’s major housing boom of the 1960s and 1970s when well-known builders such as Harold Welch, father of Midland native and former first lady Laura Bush, were at the peak of their careers. “He designed quite a few of the houses over here,” Lester says. Three-bedroom homes are priced between $300,000 and $400,000, while 5-bedroom homes can range from $450,000 to $550,000.

Kids can walk to Emerson Elementary and Goddard Junior High
Emerson Elementary, rated B-plus on Niche, and Robert H. Goddard Junior High, rated C, are within walking distance of the neighborhood. In ninth grade, students may attend Midland Freshman High before moving on to C-plus-rated Midland Senior High, which offers a robust Air Force JROTC program. Following a referendum passed in early 2024, the city announced its plans to build a new Midland High School campus to house all four grades in the coming years. Midland Independent School District is known for its Fire Academy, where teens can earn a firefighter certification. Some students have even gone on to join the city’s fire department. Early College High School at Midland College, rated A, allows students to graduate with an associate degree. Private options in the area include A-plus-rated Trinity School of Midland and A-minus-rated Midland Christian School.

Playdates at Kiwanis Park; disc golf at Windlands Park
In 2021, a shade was installed over the playground at Kiwanis Park, making the metal equipment much safer during hot Texas summers. This renovated playscape has become especially popular with local kids for its new zip line and colorful climbing wall. The 4-acre park also includes spacious soccer fields surrounded by walking paths and a picnic shelter. Nearby Windlands Park has a paved fitness trail wrapped around its disc golf course, which sits beside four baseball fields and a small xeriscape garden showcasing native and drought-tolerant plants. Local games often occur at the park’s roomy soccer complex, while walkers enjoy the looping paths in neighboring Tumbleweed Park. Across the street is the newly improved Inspiration Park, an accessible playground built by the local nonprofit Spectrum of Solutions. COM Aquatics, an indoor aquatic fitness center, is a block away.

Movie screenings and National Night Out block parties
While no formal homeowners association organizes neighborhood events, Lester says the community finds its own ways to gather. “Occasionally, they will do a movie night. One of the neighbors has a blow-up movie screen that they set up in the yard.” In Texas, National Night Out is celebrated on the first Tuesday in October rather than August, the more popular month in other states. Lester says the neighborhood loves participating in this block party event, which aims to bridge the gap between citizens and the local police. Nearby Midland College hosts events throughout the year at its Chaparral Center, including concerts, book signings and holiday evenings with Santa Claus. Downtown Midland’s Centennial Park is also a hub of community events, hosting the annual Fiesta at the Park concert, a seasonal farmers market and the Star-Spangled Salute Fourth of July celebration.

Dine and drink on Wadley Avenue
Restaurants along West Wadley Avenue include local favorites such as Ray’s Italian Bistro, a community staple for pizza. “Ray’s has been there forever. It’s fantastic,” Lester says. He also recommends The Patio Drafthouse, a laid-back spot for Tex-Mex cuisine and local beers. The same Plaza Oaks shopping center is also home to Venezia, an elegant Italian eatery that’s served the community since 1988. Mulberry Café is a popular stop for morning coffee, while local brewery The Waystone welcomes patrons for an evening of brews and board games. Natural Foods Market is the closest grocer, and H-E-B is about a mile down the road. Retail options such as Midland Park Mall, Barnes and Noble, Best Buy, Target and Walmart Supercenter are less than 2 miles away.

The Loop connects drivers with I-20
One of the neighborhood’s greatest conveniences is its proximity to state Route 250, which locals call The Loop. The closest on-ramp is less than a mile north, making it easy for drivers to bypass city streets to reach Interstate 20. Midland International Air & Space Port is 10 miles away from here, and Odessa is about 20 miles away. Local EZ-Rider buses stop along major roads such as Wadley Avenue, offering commuters a 30-minute ride to downtown Midland.
