The Midland Independent School District has a C-plus overall grade on Niche. Students are within walking distance of Milam Elementary, a C-rated school with extracurricular groups that include a running club and student council. San Jacinto Junior High, which earns a C-plus, offers programs dedicated to STEM, hospitality and tourism. Midland Freshman High has educational tracks that include agriculture, food and natural resources, and visual and design arts. While Midland Senior High has academies focused on business, health science and petroleum. Both Midland Freshman and Midland Senior earn a C-plus.
Key arteries like Loop 250 are nearby
Loma Linda is only about 2 miles south of Loop 250, an artery locals can use to get just about anywhere around Midland. The neighborhood is about 4 miles north of Interstate 20, which is a straight shot to the city of Odessa, 25 miles away. “If you’re working in Odessa, it would be a really good neighborhood to go to,” says Norma Pine, a local broker and co-owner of Pine & Beckett Realtors, who is regularly a top producer in Midland. People in Loma Linda have multiple EZ-Rider bus stops within walking distance, too.
Ratliff offers close-by recreational space
Nearby Ratliff Park features 5 acres including a playground, ball diamond and soccer fields. People are also less than a mile from the 4-acre Martin Luther King Jr. Park, which includes the MLK Community Center. The community center hosts a range of activities, including a youth basketball league and a spring break camp. There are also Sunday church services here, organized by the Community Worship Center.
Tank's Bar-B-Que is more than meets the eye
Located in a small, white building just off Scharbauer Drive, Tank's Bar-B-Que & Catering has a lofty reputation. Locals laud not just the barbecue here, but also the burgers. And they can finish a meal with a helping of banana pudding. People can also stop by Taco diVino on Oak Avenue, known in part for its street corn. Scharbauer Drive has a Super Mercado grocery store, too, and there’s also a Dollar General in the neighborhood.
There’s much to do around Midland
Locals can find a variety of community programming around the city throughout the year. Juneteenth, for example, brings four days of events at Washington Park, which is only about 3 miles from Loma Linda. The four days include everything from live music to a pool party to a parade. Midland has an annual evening Christmas parade as well, along A Street, which is roughly a mile from Loma Linda.
