The Midland Independent School District serves Permian Estates. Students can attend Long Elementary School, which is within the neighborhood, before Alamo Junior High School and Legacy Freshman High School. These schools all receive C grades from Niche. Students may graduate from Legacy High, which earns a C-plus and offers dual enrollment courses with Midland College. The high school also has a storied athletic program, having won three state championships in football and serving as the alma mater of a host of professional athletes in both football and baseball. While limited bus services run along South Midland Drive and West Illinois Avenue, Permian Estates is a mostly car-dependent neighborhood. It has easy access to Texas state Highway Loop 250, which leads throughout Midland, and U.S. Interstate 20, which leads from West Texas to the state’s eastern border and beyond. Just across I-20, there are manufacturing plants, oil facilities and industrial areas. It’s about a 20-mile drive southwest to Odessa, the next town over, where many residents work, shop and dine. “In West Texas, you have to commute everywhere,” Perkins says. “It’s 5 hours to El Paso and 5 hours to Austin, but people don’t think anything about getting on the road and going places.” For air travel, the Midland International Air & Space Port is about 9 miles southwest.
Easy access to I-20 makes commuting from Permian Estates a breeze.
