A slice of rural Lycoming County with easier access to amenities
Like the townships surrounding it, Mifflin features a similar landscape of mountainous ridges, plummeting valleys and small farms. However, residents enjoy quicker access to amenities such as stores, restaurants and schools than in nearby communities. That’s largely thanks to proximity to Salladasburg, a small borough surrounded by Mifflin, and Jersey Shore, a more populated borough 5 miles south. Mifflin’s municipal park also sets it apart from other sparsely populated communities in the rural stretches of the Williamsport, Pennsylvania, area. Mifflin Township Park is not only distinct because it has pickleball courts and a designated walking path, but it’s one of the only local green spaces for miles. “I like the fact we are not that far from town, but we enjoy a rural setting,” says Renee’ Sheddy, the township’s secretary and treasurer.

Mifflin Township Park, Pine Creek Rail Trail provide recreation
Locals most often come to Mifflin Township Park to walk the path encircling the park, but people also stop by for games of pickleball, volleyball or slow-pitch softball. Every other Friday afternoon, Williamsport-based James V. Brown Library parks its Book’s Bus at the park, bringing a collection of books that kids and teens can check out. Hunters can enter 2,800 acres of forested hills known as State Game Lands No. 114 on the north edge of the township. This conserved area is used for hunting, fishing and occasional cross-country skiing. Four miles west of Mifflin, cyclists can park at the Whitetail Trailhead and embark on the 62-mile Pine Creek Rail Trail. “It was a railroad bed they converted to a trail,” Sheddy says. “You can get on in Jersey Shore and go clear above Wellsboro.”

Flood risk and fracking in Mifflin
Canoe Run, Mud Run and other creeks flowing through Mifflin create small flood zones. Homebuyers in these areas may need flood insurance. Residents should also be aware there are several fracking sites in the township. Fracking uses a high-pressure mixture of water, sand and chemicals to extract natural gas from rock. In 2016, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released a nationwide study that found fracking can contaminate drinking water under some circumstances. In Mifflin, these gas wells are typically in uninhabited areas.

Kindergarteners through fifth graders can go to Salladasburg Elementary School on the south side of Mifflin. Graded a B by Niche, Salladasburg Elementary may soon be closed by the Jersey Shore Area School District. Students would be sent to Jersey Shore Area Middle School or Avis Elementary School. B-rated Jersey Shore Area Middle School and Jersey Shore Area Senior High School, graded a B-minus, are both 5 miles outside of Mifflin in the borough of Jersey Shore.
