Hilly and rural Lycoming County township
Mill Creek, tucked away in rural Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, is a small community of about 600 people. The Allegheny Mountains sit behind the rolling hills and farmlands of Mill Creek, and country roads lead to homes built on acres of land passed down through generations. "We're just a little speck on the map," says Norma Zeisloft, Mill Creek Township's secretary and resident since 1970. She describes Mill Creek as a hometown where residents enjoy serenity and seclusion in the woods. "Bears have been on our porch, and you hear coyotes howling sometimes at night," she says.

Homes along dirt roads that rarely come up for sale
Roads in Mill Creek are either unpaved or paved with tar and chip. Each year in spring, the township grades the roads to level out ditches and potholes. Traditional homes built throughout the 20th century sell for between $200,000 and $515,000, depending on their size and the amount of land they sit on. Some homes are within viewing distance of one another but still sit on several acres of land, and most properties have views of the rolling hills and mountains from the front and backyards. Mill Creek also has many farms, though these almost never come up for sale. Zeisloft says that residents usually keep land in the family and will occasionally build new homes on family-owned land. "They don't really like to sell it to developers," she says. "We have some new people moving in, but not many developments and not much ground for sale for people to build their farms." Mill Creek has a CAP Index crime score of 1, significantly lower than the national average of 4.

Snowmobiling on Mill Creek's roads and mountain trails
Many trailheads and nature parks are in the mountains just north of Mill Creek. Hikers can peek through trees revealing expansive views of the Alleghenies at Rider Park or hike up to a waterfall cascading over flat rocks and foliage at Jacoby Falls Trailhead. Zeisloft says families also commonly ride four-wheelers, dirt bikes and snowmobiles in the township. "They go on the roads, and no one bothers them as long as they're not ripping and tearing around," she says.
Fracking in Mill Creek can cause disturbances
There is a natural gas well for fracking on the eastern edge of Mill Creek, causing disturbances for some residents. The township and some landowners in Mill Creek receive money from the government to accommodate fracking from companies such as PG Energy and Inflection Energy. Dust and traffic from the fracking operation's water trucks may affect homes along State Route 864, Upper Rynearson Road and Fire Tower Road. "Water trucks on dirt roads: it's dusty. I've gotten so many calls of dust balls. If you live on that road next to it, that's a major issue," Zeisloft says. "It's not all over the township, but If you're four or five houses over from the road, you can hear them." Additionally, studies have shown fracking can contaminate drinking water and pollute the air.
No grocery stores or restaurants in the township
Walmart and Weis are about 10 miles southwest on Loyalsock Avenue in Montoursville. "People don't go more than once a week, and everybody has freezers if they need to stock up," Zeisloft says. "A lot of people have generators too, because the power goes out every so often." Tivoli Tavern is a country bar about 8 miles east of Mill Creek off Route 220. Here visitors can hang out at the bar, drink a beer and eat pub fare in the modest venue with bar signs covering the walls.

Small churches and no large events in Mill Creek
Mill Creek doesn't have any major events, and Huntersville United Methodist Church is the township's only church. "We have maybe 12 people that go there," Zeisloft says. Heilman Church and Church of the Good Shepherd are also not far outside Mill Creek's boundaries. "Our church is Hielman, which has 35 people, and there's very few kids. I would take kids to a bigger church that has more activities." The Allegheny Grange Hall on Kehrer Hill Road is a community group of about two dozen residents who organize food drives, pick up litter and visit nursing homes, among other volunteer work. Residents can also go 16 miles down to South Williamsport for the Little League World Series, the largest event in the region held each year in August. This tournament spans 10 days and welcomes youth teams from around the U.S. and the world to compete for the world title.

Zeisloft notes that, although buses do transport students to and from school during regular hours, there are no buses for students who stay late or arrive early for athletics or other activities.
