A suburb in the forest north of San Francisco
Fourteen miles north of San Francisco, in view of the Marin Hills, is Homestead Valley. To its west, the iconic Muir Woods National Monument invites visitors to walk among 1,000-year-old redwoods. The community comes together around barbecues and seasonal celebrations hosted by the Homestead Valley Community Association, which also holds a day-long music festival in August. Stolte Grove brings people out for the picnic tables, grills and walking trails among redwoods. Several trails wind through the woods and gentle hills of the undeveloped parts of the neighborhood. “If you look at a bird’s eye map, there’s huge blocks of open space,” says Goldman. The giant redwood trees at the Muir Woods National Monument are 4 miles away, accessible by foot for the intrepid hiker. Muir Beach, 6.5 miles away, is a well-known cove on the Pacific Coast and can be reached by a 450-foot pedestrian bridge. The Dipsea Race has been held since 1905 and draws hundreds of runners from around the world. The grueling 7.4-mile race up and down forest stairs and steep hills is held on the second Sunday in June. “The Dipsea Trail is very famous,” says Cathy Youngling, owner and broker of Cathy Youngling Real Estate and a top producer since 1995. “It goes up and over Mount Tam – it’s become part of the culture. It’s so incredible every year.”
