Homestead Valley
Community events and woodsy trails invite outdoor activities
The community comes together around barbecues and seasonal celebrations hosted by the Homestead Valley Community Association, which also holds a day-long music festival in August. Stolte Grove brings people out for the picnic tables, grills and walking trails among redwoods. Several trails wind through the woods and gentle hills of the undeveloped parts of the neighborhood. “If you look at a bird’s eye map, there’s huge blocks of open space,” says Goldman. The giant redwood trees at the Muir Woods National Monument are 4 miles away, accessible by foot for the intrepid hiker. Muir Beach, 6.5 miles away, is a well-known cove on the Pacific Coast and can be reached by a 450-foot pedestrian bridge. The Dipsea Race has been held since 1905 and draws hundreds of runners from around the world. The grueling 7.4-mile race up and down forest stairs and steep hills is held on the second Sunday in June. “The Dipsea Trail is very famous,” says Cathy Youngling, owner and broker of Cathy Youngling Real Estate and a top producer since 1995. “It goes up and over Mount Tam – it’s become part of the culture. It’s so incredible every year.”Unique homes on roads winding up forested hills
Development of Homestead Valley began in the early 1900s, and no two homes are alike, with many taking inspiration from Craftsman and Colonial Revival styles. “It’s an array of houses from different eras. The modern houses are usually from a home that’s been torn down,” says Goldman. Most are built with terraces, decks and windows to make the most of the hilly landscape and views. Small homes range from around $1.3 million to $2 million, while larger homes with multi-levels range from around $2.3 million to $3.5 million. The biggest estates perched high enough for panoramic views may cost between $4 million and $4.5 million. Homebuyers should know that Homestead Valley has a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4.Whole Foods and other hot spots on Miller Avenue
