A waterfront neighborhood in south San Francisco near the airport
Downtown Millbrae is a lively urban Bay Area neighborhood known for its temperate weather and walkability, 15 miles south of downtown San Francisco. “It’s a lovely area. There are very few cons to living there, quite frankly,” says Clarissa Cortez, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty who has worked in the area for over two decades. “The weather is good, the school district is desirable and it’s affordable compared to areas like San Mateo.” The neighborhood is situated in the middle of the San Francisco Peninsula and next to the city’s busy international airport. “It’s also very close to the freeway,” Cortez says. “You can just jump in your car and quickly get to San Francisco or, better yet, Silicon Valley.”
Millbrae Farmers Market, Sixteen Mile House
Downtown is pedestrian-friendly, with its street-level merchants, brick-lined crosswalks and plentiful parking for businesses. Millbrae Square shopping center has a Trader Joe’s grocery store and restaurants serving Mediterranean food and French pastries across the street from a Safeway grocery store. Sun’s Market is an Asian grocery store in the area, and next door is Millbrae Farmers’ Market, which offers seasonal produce and homemade items on Saturdays. Locally-owned Dean’s Produce has locations in Millbrae and San Mateo.
In the center of downtown is Sixteen Mile House, a restaurant with an Old Western exterior that gets its name from being a mile marker in the 1800s. The building has had many lives – as a saloon, grocery store and even a brothel – but today it’s a steakhouse known for its prime rib and cocktails. The Kitchen is a Cantonese restaurant with banquet-style seating, and nearby is Fiddlers Green, an Irish pub and restaurant known for its cozy, wooden interior.

Commute by car or bus
Millbrae is about 26 miles north of Silicon Valley, the internationally renowned tech hub home to over 30 Fortune 500 companies, including Apple, Facebook and Intel. The neighborhood has three freeways that lead to downtown San Francisco: State Route 82, U.S. Route 101 and Interstate 280. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency has bus stops throughout the Millbrae area. For long-distance travel, the San Francisco International Airport is next to the neighborhood. The closeness does cause some noise pollution, but Cortez says it's not to the point where it affects everyday life. “You can easily sleep through it. In Millbrae, you’ll probably hear the buses more,” she says.
San Francisco’s flooding concerns
Because of its peninsula location, Downtown Millbrae is at high risk of flooding; depending on the exact flood zone, homeowners must have flood insurance. Mills-Peninsula Medical Center is a 24-hour medical center right outside the neighborhood.
