New York countryside town with storybook seclusion
Founded in 1793 and set 95 miles north of New York City, Stanford is a Dutchess County town offering rustic seclusion with a diverse range of homes dating from the late 18th century through today. “It’s a beautiful rural area with a strong history of community,” says Steve Bruman, a Realtor with Corcoran Country Living and co-owner of Bangallworks, a coworking and community building. “It’s a preferred weekend destination, but we find more and more people are staying here.” Verdant with rolling hills, woodlands and tree-lined country roads, Stanford is a haven for the naturalist, and local parks are brimming with wildlife and outdoor activities. Shopping and dining are limited, and the community supports small businesses and locally sourced produce. “The weather, the produce and the climate all bring creative people that love art, food and nature,” Bruman says. “It’s not unlike northern California in terms of the bucolic lifestyle.” The overall CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. “People love it,” Bruman says. “They want it rural; that’s why they come here.”
Play, swim and hike in Stanford
The 20-acre Stanford Recreation Park is the go-to spot for outdoor gatherings and adventures. There’s a picnic pavilion with grills, a chlorinated swimming pond and sports like baseball, pickleball and soccer — to name just a few. For kids, there’s a 14,000-square-foot playground built entirely by community volunteers. “We raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and, over a matter of two weeks, hundreds of community members completely redid the playground,” Bruman says. Dirt-packed walking trails run along Wappinger Creek, where residents may cast their fishing lines for rainbow trout and brown trout. Buttercup Farm Audubon Sanctuary is a highlight for its miles of walking trails, along which birdwatchers can spot over 80 avian species, including great blue herons, American woodcocks and great horned owls. Folks interested in a scenic overlook can hike the 2-mile trail up Stissing Mountain to admire the town’s deep forests and undulating landscape with the Catskill Mountains rising in the west. “Buttercup, I think, is preferable because it’s flat, scenic and very accessible, whereas Stissing Mountain, you have to trek up there, but people of all ages do it,” Bruman says.

Colonial, ranch and farmhouse estates with acreage
Set along country roads, Stanford’s single-family homes are generally a mix of farmhouse, ranch and Colonial styles from the late 18th century through today. “Stanford is historic and full of properties people are looking for,” Bruman says. “In terms of an older house, they can keep it as is or renovate it.” Common features across architectural styles include wood flooring, covered patios or porches and detached multi-car garages. These two- to five-bedroom homes typically have layouts ranging from about 1,500 to 3,500 square feet with grassy lots ranging from 1 to 25 acres, though the largest homes go up to 5,000 square feet with up to 125 acres of land. Many homes have pastoral views with a mix of oak, maple and pine trees; occasional additions include barns, stables or workshops. Most single-family homes range from $300,000 to $1.5 million, depending on a home’s size and features. Homes at the lower end of the price range are typically smaller and may need renovations, while homes at the top are spacious estates with up-to-date furnishings. “Living in the country, there are new things to think about, like septic and maintenance,” Bruman says. “But the pleasure of a house in the country is you can be back in the day; it’s a thrill.”
Colonial-style homes are one of the most common types throughout the Stanford neighborhood.

Stanford Recreation events and celebrations
Stanford Recreation organizes town events throughout the year, typically at Stanford Recreation Park. Holiday celebrations include the Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween’s Trunk-or-Treat and Mommy & Me Tea Party for Mother’s Day, but there are also new events each year. For children, Recipes 4 Kids is a recurring culinary arts class with fun recipes like chocolate-covered strawberries and snail stromboli. Kids may also sign up for Stanford Summer Camp to enjoy time with friends and a packed schedule of outdoor activities, including swim lessons and sports.
Farm-to-table shopping and dining
“People here don’t necessarily go to a big-box store; you can go to Kingston for that,” Bruman says. “People do the farm stands; people are members of CSAs.” Community Supported Agriculture is a partnership between farmers and customers that allows folks to buy a share of the farm’s harvest in advance; at Sisters Hills Farm, members enjoy fresh veggies, including lettuce, tomatoes and summer squash. For a wider selection of groceries, Big Rock Market is a one-stop shop for locally sourced meat, dairy, produce and pantry essentials. There are a handful of restaurants along state Route 82, including Peyo’s Cafe, where locals may dash in for coffee or enjoy brunch bites like BYO omelets and chicken quesadillas. Nearby, Val’s Pizzeria is popular for a quick slice, while Coyote Flaco is the spot to dine on authentic Mexican cuisine or grab a seat at the bar with a jalapeño margarita. Local businesses include Bulls Head Treasures, an antique shop, Le Caviste, a wine and spirit store, and Foxtrot Farm, a flower farm and studio offering flower arrangements, arranging classes and a CSA. For a fine dining experience, Bruman recommends Stissing House in Pine Plains, about 6 miles away, for a seasonally driven, farm-to-table menu that reflects the best of the Hudson Valley’s bounty. “If someone messes up food here, they’re nuts because it’s all in the palm of your hand,” Bruman says. “It’s a very special place.”
