Lawrenceville charm without Lawrenceville prices
Millvale, once a mill town, transitioned from the steel industry to a stylish business district. “Millvale has a lot of special things about it. It has a hipster vibe similar to Lawrenceville in that respect,” says Sara Leitera, Realtor at Berkshire Hathaway. Millvale sits just across the river from the highly sought-after Lawrenceville, right outside Pittsburgh city limits. With prices maxing out around the high $400,000s — less than half the cost of Lawrenceville’s more expensive properties — this borough features many of the same benefits, including great downtown proximity, a beautiful park on the river and a thriving food scene. It’s no wonder why this community continues gaining traction as Pittsburgh market prices rise.

From century-old homes to new construction
Residential roads descend lush, maple-studded hills in Millvale. Some sections have sidewalks, and the front yards often have enough space for decorative bushes and hostas. Many homes here are a century old or older, some dating back as far as the 1870s. One of the more popular architectural styles is the American Foursquare, with brick exteriors and staircases leading to covered front porches where residents can have lunch al fresco. Other kinds of homes in the community include Victorians, cozy bungalows, townhouses and duplexes. List prices range from $25,000 to $494,000. “People who were priced out of Lawrenceville live here, so now it’s popular and hard to come by,” Leitera says. So, interested homebuyers may want to keep an eye out.

Brunch at Lincoln’s P&G Diner
Plenty of watering holes and restaurants lie in Millvale’s business district, centered around Grant Avenue. “A lot of little breweries are opening. Grist House is really nice with tons of outdoor seating,” Leitera says. A dog-friendly establishment, Grist House Craft Brewery offers a variety of IPAs and sours. For brunch, people can head to Lincoln’s P&G Diner, a member of the beloved Pamela’s Diner chain in Pittsburgh. It serves up crepe-style pancakes and lyonnaise potatoes in an interior that still includes signage from its former days as the Lincoln Pharmacy. Alternatively, Iron Board Pizza makes Detroit-style pies for deep dish fans with easy takeout or delivery options and no dine-in.
As for home cooking, folks can grab a few things for the pantry at Millvale Market. That said, more extensive household restocking might take folks a couple miles north or across the river to the nearest Shop ‘n Save.
