Alverno
Neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Milwaukee County 53215, 53220, 53221
New, midcentury and historic
Cherokee Way is one of the main roads that run north and south through the neighborhood. Around it are homes of the Cherokee Point subdivision, which include large colonials for $500,000 constructed in the early 2000s to modest bungalows listing at $270,000 built in the 1920s. Cherokee Point also features “ranch condos” on one level, which boast vaulted ceilings, for $250,000. For older homes with good bones, the area north of the college’s campus features midcentury homes in the $200,000 range. Realtor Beth Jaworski of Shorewest Realtors says many of the historic Tudors and colonials in the neighborhood are made with highly desired stone from the Lannon Stone quarry in Waukesha County. Another attractive fact about Alverno is that it received a 4 out of 10 on crime from the CAP Index, which matches the national average.Playgrounds and sports fields
Cherokee Point homes center around a neighborhood park, whose small yet packed acreage includes kid-friendly slides, swings, obstacles and covered seating for outdoor meals. At Zablocki Park, sports enthusiasts will appreciate the tennis and basketball courts, baseball and soccer fields, and nine-hole golf course, one of the shortest public courses in Milwaukee County. To the north, Jackson Park features walking trails, a public swimming pool, a pond and more athletic facilities.Schools with specialized programs
The elementary and middle schools that serve Alverno received Cs from Niche. They include the Milwaukee Spanish Immersion School – Upper Campus, one of four schools in Milwaukee that offers a language immersion program, and Audubon Technology and Communication Middle, where students explore technical fields from computer science to web design and forensics. High schoolers can attend the Golda Meir School, which scored an A-minus from Niche and offers the AP Diploma program and a wide selection of Advanced Placement courses.
Farmers market and Milwaukee festivals
Residents can purchase fresh produce, honey, flowers and other locally made products on Thursday evenings at Jackson Park from June to October. In Milwaukee, the downtown comes alive with Summerfest, the world's largest music festival. “The city also has a Polish festival and an Italian festival. It’s a parade of festivals here in the summer,” Bouvette says.Proximity to public transit
On its way into the city, the Ride Milwaukee County Transit System bus crosses Alverno along South 43rd Street and West Morgan Avenue. With Interstate 41 and 43 passing close to the neighborhood, drivers are only 7 miles from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, 8 miles from Downtown Milwaukee, 90 miles from Chicago and 60 from Sheboygan.Routes to restaurants and retail
On Forest Home Avenue to the northwest, locally owned eateries like Di Stefano’s Pizza Palace, a family-owned small business with over a half-century of history, line the corridor. On Howard Avenue to the west is Scordato Bakery, where longtime pastry pro Giovanni Scordato and his team handmake dozens of baked treats daily. On Morgan Avenue to the east, Southgate Shopping Area offers big-box retailers like Walmart Supercenter, Pick ’n Save grocery and a dozen franchise restaurants.Resources for body and spirit
