A brewer’s place to settle
Not many neighborhoods represent Milwaukee’s beer-steeped history and culture quite like Brewer’s Hill. This neighborhood of roughly 2,000 Milwaukeeans sits on the banks of the Milwaukee River and gets its name from the number of brewery workers who once called it home. Today, it features one of the area’s most iconic breweries, locally beloved eateries and a large stock of beautiful classic homes.

Diverse architectural tradition by the river
Brewer’s Hill was first platted in 1837 and experienced a massive boom at the turn of the 20th century when brewers, tanners and foundry workers flooded there. The homes built during that period represent a variety of architectural traditions as diverse as the people who lived in them. Thick-pillared bungalows, brick Italianate homes, Colonial Revivals with wood siding, Queen Anne and Stick-style structures are found throughout the neighborhood’s gridded streets, which feature sidewalks passing beneath large deciduous trees. Meanwhile, several condominium complexes have popped up around the neighborhood in recent years, with some units directly overlooking the Milwaukee River. Home costs vary greatly here, with investment properties listing less than $100,000 and most other properties selling between $215,000 and $490,000. However, some listings can cost up to $730,000.

Cyclists and swing-enthusiasts unite
The whir of pedals and cranking of gears can be heard just about anywhere in Brewer’s Hill. Cyclists particularly love to ride the Marsupial Bridge, a dangling pathway beneath the Holton Street Viaduct that sends travelers straight toward downtown. Beneath the viaduct is also Swing Park, a sand-covered expanse where adults can be kids and unwind on one of several adult-sized swings. Walkers and bikers in the area also love taking the RiverWalk, a path that follows the Milwaukee River through three different historic districts and passes countless watering holes.

Original brews and polka nights at Lakefront Brewery
Brewer’s Hill can’t be discussed any longer without bringing up Lakefront Brewery, which is also more or less located under the Holton Street Viaduct (no joke). This 35-year-old neighborhood staple is worth visiting just for the smattering of beer kegs nailed artistically to the outside. But locals who go inside Lakefront can try out dozens of original brews, munch on its locally renowned cheese curds, take the nationally ranked brewery tour or dance along to a live polka band on Friday nights. Should diners crave something other than beer, View MKE lets customers enjoy a glimpse of the city skyline along with specialty wines, cocktails and eclectic dinner entrees, like their espresso-rubbed pork shoulder. For early birds or those who love breakfast for lunch, Uncle Wolfie’s Breakfast Tavern serves breakfast and brunch set in an easygoing, Art Deco-inspired space filled with indoor plants. And when locals want to make homecooked meals, Pete’s Fruit Market sells fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables, packaged meats and bulk dry goods.
