Why people are moving to Brewers Hill
Named for the many brewery workers who settled in the area in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Brewers Hill is now a trendy and young neighborhood along the Milwaukee River. The community is within walking and biking distance of the city's central business and entertainment district, yet far enough removed to maintain a residential and stroll-worthy atmosphere.

Explore the area’s diverse architectural styles
Homes from the neighborhood's earliest days include bungalows, Italianate homes, Colonial Revivals and Queen Anne Victorians with colorfully painted wood siding and ornate trim. Condominiums and apartments along the river comprise the area's more modern options. "Some people still seek that character and historic beauty of a home, whereas some people see the beauty of a new build that has that HGTV feel," says Dave Geszvain, a Realtor with Compass Real Estate Wisconsin. "So, [Brewers Hill] is kind of a blend between the two, and a lot of homes in the area are being rehabilitated, too." Throughout the area, most properties are well-kept with patios, gardens, shrubbery and privacy fences. Alleyways lead to detached garages, and overnight street parking requires a permit.

What properties cost in Brewers Hill
Prices in Brewers Hill are on trend with the metropolitan area, but are slightly more expensive than in neighborhoods farther north and west, such as Harambee, North Division and Triangle North:
Single-family homes sell from the high $200,000 to the low $600,000s.
Multifamily properties with two to eight units range between the low $300,000 and the low $800,000s.
Modern condos sell from the low $200,000s to the low $700,000s.
Apartments have monthly rents between $1,300 and $3,300, depending on size, parking and amenities.
Generally, homes sell quickly, staying on the market for only a few weeks. "[People] want to be in these areas that have a little bit more of a vibe to them and a little bit more life. That's also part of what drives the interest in these parts of town," Geszvain says.
Downtown Milwaukee is within walking and biking distance
Being less than 2 miles from East Town – Milwaukee's downtown financial district – residents can get to work and entertainment via a 10-minute bike ride, a 20-minute walk or a 5-minute drive, although parking downtown might be difficult. "It's got the feel of being on the outskirts of town, but frankly, it's only a mile to a couple of miles away from really anything that you're going to need downtown," Geszvain says. Bike lanes are available in the area and cross the river, including one along the Marsupial Bridge that hangs under the Holton Street Viaduct. If you don't have a bike of your own, Bublr Bikes Milwaukee has docking stations near the river. MCTS buses stop along the area's bordering streets.

Young and educated individuals live in Brewers Hill
Brewers Hill is close to everything the city has to offer, but is not so deep in the action that it's noisy or crowded. "The vibe is there. The lifestyle is there. So, it's attracting, naturally, a lot of younger professionals," Geszvain says. The area is young, educated and has a higher-than-average median household income, further attracting like-minded individuals. "There are probably some younger families too, but it's got that sort of playful feel to it. It's the come, stay, play and have fun spot before you kick out and move to the suburbs," Geszvain says. Tall trees shade the sidewalks, and residents enjoy evening walks and bike rides around the community. The Oak Leaf Trail, a 135-mile paved trail that spans all of Milwaukee County, passes through.
New and longstanding restaurants in Brewers Hill
As more young professionals move to the area, more restaurants and bars are following suit. Avli opened in 2023 and serves upscale Greek food, while Bronzeville Kitchen and Lounge opened in 2024 and serves American fare and Southern cuisine. Two of the area's oldest establishments are Uncle Wolfie's Breakfast Tavern and Lakefront Brewery. Keeping the neighborhood's name relevant, the quirky brewery overlooks the Milwaukee River and has art installations, a patio and guided tours. Locals can grab groceries at Pete's Fruit Market, and Fresh Thyme Market is just over the Pleasant Street bridge, in Lower East Side.
