Frank Lloyd Wright's designs next door

It’s unclear why renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright chose Burnham Park as the site for six efficiently designed yet affordable homes. If he were alive to see what Burnham Park has become, he’d be confident that he chose the right spot: a spirited, culturally rich Milwaukee neighborhood with a green space that delights visitors and brings neighbors together.

Prewar bungalows and more

Burnham Park is home to over 8,000 Milwaukeeans, many in decades-old homes packed into gridded streets. Brick and wood-framed bungalows from before World War II dominate the neighborhood— some with jerkinhead roofs and small sunrooms jutting from the front, others with pointed roofs and covered porches. Stone and brick Tudor-style homes also pop up around the neighborhood, as do ranch-style homes and vertically stacked duplexes. Detached homes start in the mid-to-high $100,000s, which could buy four bedrooms and roughly 1,500 square feet. Larger floor plans and more recent renovations typically cost closer to $300,000 . Sidewalks stretch in front of most Burnham Park homes. Many properties back up to paved alleys lined with detached garages and sheds.

"The heart of the neighborhood"

The heart of the neighborhood is its namesake green space. Burnham Park was first developed into a playfield in 1925 but was neglected in the following decades. However, Milwaukee Recreation recently spearheaded a yearslong redevelopment of the park, which reopened in July 2022. Today, it features four baseball diamonds, miniature and full-sized soccer facilities, a colorful playground, basketball courts and a wading pool. “All the updates for Burnham Playfield were informed by a lot of robust feedback from the community — even the colors of the playgrounds,” says Pamela Zimmerman, design and development specialist with Milwaukee Recreation. She adds that since its reopening, Burnham Park has become “the heart of the neighborhood” once more.

Multiple bilingual schools

Several schools operate in the neighborhood, including two bilingual schools welcoming kindergarten through eighth grade. Greenfield Bilingual School has a C-minus from Niche and has been named a Title 1 School of Recognition by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (WDPI) several years in a row. It offers an immersive English and Spanish curriculum and extracurriculars like co-ed sports, African dance and violin lessons. Academia de Lenguaje y Bellas Artes (ALBA), rated a D-plus , also offers robust arts-based extracurriculars through partnerships with local organizations. Just next door is the Carmen High School of Science and Technology South Campus. This C-plus-rated charter school for grades nine through 12 focuses on college and career readiness. Each Burnham Park school is within walking distance of many residents.

Friday fish fries and polka parties

McKiernan’s Irish Pub is one of several restaurants bringing international flavors to Burnham Park. Here, customers enjoy classic Irish eats and daily specials — including a Friday fish fry — all while singing along with visiting musicians. Just a couple blocks north is Kochanski’s Concertina Beer Hall, which has served several functions — a rooming house and brothel among them — since the early 1900s. Wednesday visitors can clap their hands along to a live polka jam session while nursing their brews of choice. The venue also hosts frequent rock and blues shows and the annual Polish Pile-Up Music Festival. Locals can prepare for backyard barbecues and other home-cooked meals at Cermak Fresh Market, just west of the neighborhood.
