Columbus Park offers walkable access to daily essentials
Columbus Park is that rare neighborhood on Milwaukee’s Northwest Side where virtually everything you need is a walk or bike ride away, with a public school at each corner, grocery stores in similar supply and a public gathering space at its heart.
Gridded streets lined with diverse early 20th-century home styles
Gridded residential blocks fill most of Columbus Park’s acreage, housing over 4,000 people. “It’s like one big melting pot,” says Craig Walker of Milwaukee County Parks. “Everyone’s quiet, minding their business and friendly.” Residents live mainly in single-family homes established in the first half of the 20th century. You’ll find all that era’s typical architectural styles, from pre-World War II bungalows, Tudors and Cape Cods to Colonials and ranch-style homes from later decades. The average Columbus Park home costs around $175,000, though you might find a two-bedroom rambler with fewer than 720 square feet in the lower $100,000s. On the other end, a three-bedroom ranch-style house with over 1,700 square feet and more recent updates could cost in the mid-$200,000s.
Arts, music and family events enrich local elementary schools
Students of all ages in Columbus Park can walk or bike to the nearest Milwaukee Public Schools location, thanks to an abundance of sidewalks. Three public schools around the neighborhood accommodate kindergarten through eighth grade, including Craig Montessori School, to the southwest. Wisconsin’s public education department has awarded Craig Montessori a commendable four-star rating for its curriculum focused on human development and fine arts, including extracurriculars like piano and violin lessons. Meanwhile, Lancaster School offers small class sizes for its students, and Grantosa Drive Elementary puts on year-round family events, including Doughnuts with Dads and Muffins with Moms. Finally, Marshall High School operates just southeast of the neighborhood, welcoming teens to try their hand at career paths from engineering to audiovisual technology.
Baseball, kickball and sledding all happen at Indigenous Peoples’ Park
Columbus Park residents are all within a roughly 15-minute walk of Indigenous Peoples’ Park. This public green space makes the most of its relatively compact 10 acres, fitting three Little League diamonds into its southern half. “I used to play baseball there back in the ‘80s,” Walker says. While no official Little League games take place there today, locals still use the fields for frequent pickup games. Walker adds, “We’ve got a couple of kickball leagues that will come over and play.” The park’s northern section comprises a playground, a splash pad and, whenever Jack Frost visits, a sledding hill.
Asian comfort food and Mexican fare are neighborhood staples
Several locally owned eateries also operate in Columbus Park within walking distance of many residents. One of the newest is An Ox Café, which opened its doors in 2022 to unleash the zesty aromas of Asian comfort food. Follow your nose into An Ox’s large dining room or outdoor patio to dig into a steaming bowl of pho, a crunchy egg roll or a sweet serving of sticky rice — and sip a beer, wine or cocktail while you’re at it. A few blocks west, Burrito Bueno ensures you’ll never leave hungry with a robust lunchtime buffet plus a stocked, tequila-heavy bar. (You can never go wrong with a jumbo chicken fajita and an even more jumbo frozen margarita.)
Essentials are close, and downtown is less than 20 minutes away
For nights you’re eating in, several grocery stores operate adjacent to the neighborhood, including Save A Lot and Hmong Town, plus a Walgreens. Conversely, if you’ve got something to celebrate (or are just feeling a night on the town), you’re less than 20 minutes from downtown Milwaukee’s thriving dining and entertainment culture.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
