Fairfield is a workday hub with nature and education close by

Though surrounded by warehouses, shops and corporate offices, Fairfield is more than just a work-heavy neighborhood. With a large state forest right next door, plus an acclaimed high school less than 10 minutes away, Fairfield is rich in conveniences for any stage or style of life.

There's a mix of multi-family units and 1920s-era homes

Fairfield is an industry- and business-heavy section of Milwaukee’s Northwest Side, with most of its homes concentrated in the southwest section. Over 2,300 people live in a mix of single- and multi-family housing, the latter mainly including the sprawling Berryland Apartments. To find standalone homes, traverse the grid of sidewalk-lined blocks between 35th and 40th streets, where you’ll find mainly Cape Cods, many with predominantly brick or stone facades. These stately materials also cover several of the neighborhood’s bungalows, some of which have stood firm since the 1920s. On occasion, you’ll also encounter Tudors and small ranch-style homes. Fairfield’s most expensive homes can cost up to the high $200,000s, which might land you a four-bedroom brick bungalow over 2,100 square feet. However, some move-in-ready homes (albeit needing some TLC) are valued at around or below $100,000.

Public, charter and private schools are within a short drive

Two Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) operate within a few minutes of Fairfield residents by foot or car. Thurston Woods Campus sits immediately southeast of the neighborhood, less than a 15-minute walk from most homes. Wildcats in kindergarten through eighth grade can explore their creative talents and passions during visits to various music productions, thanks to partner organization Arts in Community Education. Meanwhile, Rufus King International High School is about a seven-minute drive south and attracts over 1,400 students. It’s easy to see why: Rufus King’s International Baccalaureate (IB) program draws pupils from every part of Milwaukee and has earned the school various plaudits, including an A-minus rating from Niche. Fairfield is also home to HOPE Christian School’s Fidelis campus, which accommodates kindergarten through eighth grade.

Wildlife, wetlands and wooded trails just steps from home

Havenwoods State Forest adjoins Fairfield to the west, making it easy for residents to escape Milwaukee’s urban trappings and enjoy a quiet, sprawling nature escape. Havenwoods’ 230-plus acres include a 6-mile walking trail network that winds through woodlands, grasslands and wetlands, showcasing the colorful mix of critters that come with such a diverse topography. “We also have a nature center that’s open Tuesdays through Saturdays and has some of our ambassador animals,” says Property Supervisor Angela Vickio. For those whose ideal pastime is America’s pastime, Shoenecker Park neighbors Havenwoods to the north and features a full-sized baseball diamond and three Little League fields.

Classic diner breakfasts and late-night bites close to home

Fairfield offers a short trip to some of the Northwest Side’s scrappy, family-owned businesses and restaurants, offering corned beef, Jamaican jerk-flavored eats and every cuisine in between. Residents need only walk a few blocks south to hit Jo’s Café, a roadside diner where you can grab a seat at the bar and watch a few friendly faces whip up your pancakes and eggs. Drive a few minutes northeast to enjoy lunch, dinner or late-night drinks at The Brick Pub and Grill. Wrapped in Cream City brick, this restaurant has undergone several incarnations since the early 1960s and is best known for its French onion soup and pulled pork panini.

Industries are nearby, and downtown isn't a far drive

For some Fairfield residents, grabbing groceries simply means crossing the street to Save A Lot. You could even be within walking distance of work, thanks to nearby employers like MilliporeSigma and PFlow Industries. And if errands or work require a trip downtown, you’re about a 20-minute drive away.
