Finally home in Fairview
Though it packs over 3,500 residents into less than a square mile, Fairview isn’t just for Milwaukeeans seeking dense suburban life. Residents of this Southwest Side neighborhood have easy access to a well-reputed public school and some of the region’s most coveted outdoor attractions, including McCarty Park to the west. “That McCarty Park area is very highly desired,” says local real estate agent Beth Jaworski. “So, if you can’t find a house near there, Fairview is a nice, close alternative. The proximity to parks and the elementary school is very nice.” Fairview’s tree-speckled streets are largely gridded on its outer edges, then start winding and ending in cul-de-sacs in the southeast part of the neighborhood. Regardless of where one chooses to live in the community, they’ll have convenient sidewalk access that makes it easy to safely walk or bike to class, to the park or to a friend’s house to watch the Packers play.

Suburban streetscapes
Most homes are relics of the post-World War II housing boom, meaning ranch-style, national-style and Cape Cod designs are most common. Bungalows of various styles — some with large, covered porches, others with smaller stoops and jerkinhead roofs — also dot the area. Price tags max out around $300,000, which will likely be enough for a well-maintained or renovated home with a floor plan of around 2,000 square feet. However, buyers can pay as little as $150,000 for a smaller home that might need some renovations.

Fairview foods and finds
While big-brand shopping and dining aren’t too far outside the neighborhood, Fairview itself is proudly home to a handful of locally owned businesses. In the northwest quadrant is Tarantino’s Pizzeria, a long-running joint serving classic Italian fare until 1 a.m. daily. “I can’t even think of how long they’ve been there, but it’s been 20 or 30 years,” Jaworski says. “It’s the local neighborhood gem.” Just a mile up the road, West Allis Cheese & Sausage Shoppe is another institution that has a long and storied history serving up premium locally sourced foods. Residents only need to venture a few blocks west or east to get their weekly shopping done at the nearby Save A Lot or Aldi grocery stores.

Cream City recreation
The spacious Fairview Playfield sits adjacent to the school, its two baseball diamonds a great spot for friends to bond over a pickup game or a round of batting practice. Visitors can also spread out on the grassy outfields with a picnic or a book if the baseball fields aren’t in use. A few blocks west, the 4-acre Arnold Klentz Park has two softball fields of its own along with a playground and basketball court, both shaded beneath clusters of ash and maple trees. Runners and bikers also enjoy access to the 15-mile Kinnickinnic Line of the Oak Leaf Trail, leading to McCarty Park in one direction and Jackson Park in the other.
