Suburban streetscapes
Most homes are relics of the post-World War II housing boom, meaning ranch-style, national-style and Cape Cod designs are most common. Bungalows of various styles — some with large, covered porches, others with smaller stoops and jerkinhead roofs — also dot the area. Price tags max out around $300,000, which will likely be enough for a well-maintained or renovated home with a floor plan of around 2,000 square feet. However, buyers can pay as little as $150,000 for a smaller home that might need some renovations.Cream City recreation
The spacious Fairview Playfield sits adjacent to the school, its two baseball diamonds a great spot for friends to bond over a pickup game or a round of batting practice. Visitors can also spread out on the grassy outfields with a picnic or a book if the baseball fields aren’t in use. A few blocks west, the 4-acre Arnold Klentz Park has two softball fields of its own along with a playground and basketball court, both shaded beneath clusters of ash and maple trees. Runners and bikers also enjoy access to the 15-mile Kinnickinnic Line of the Oak Leaf Trail, leading to McCarty Park in one direction and Jackson Park in the other.Walkable schools
One Milwaukee Public Schools location, Fairview School, operates in the neighborhood. This school of about 600 K-8 students boasts a four-star rating from the Wisconsin Department of Education, and is particularly proud of its arts department. Students have access to a range of tools to help them realize their artistic visions, including a pottery wheel. The school receives a C grade from Niche. Even outside school hours, Fairview School is focused on creating a community among its students and families through frequent events, including bingo nights, movie nights and open houses. Hamilton High School serves most older students in the area and earns a C grade from Niche.Convenient travel
Oklahoma Avenue runs adjacent to Fairview, taking drivers straight to the edge of Lake Michigan in the east and West Allis in the west. If any Fairview residents want to spend some time in the bustling, urban atmosphere of downtown Milwaukee, they can get there in around an 8-mile drive.Fairview foods and finds
While big-brand shopping and dining aren’t too far outside the neighborhood, Fairview itself is proudly home to a handful of locally owned businesses. In the northwest quadrant is Tarantino’s Pizzeria, a long-running joint serving classic Italian fare until 1 a.m. daily. “I can’t even think of how long they’ve been there, but it’s been 20 or 30 years,” Jaworski says. “It’s the local neighborhood gem.” Just a mile up the road, West Allis Cheese & Sausage Shoppe is another institution that has a long and storied history serving up premium locally sourced foods. Residents only need to venture a few blocks west or east to get their weekly shopping done at the nearby Save A Lot or Aldi grocery stores.
