Named for Grange and Ramsey avenues that border the neighborhood, Gra-Ram is a part of Milwaukee’s Garden District. Homebuyers typically settle here for the winding streets, mix of midcentury homes and convenient starting point for their downtown commute. There are also several nearby parks and nature areas, along with easy access to local schools.
Gra-Ram is known for its collection of midcentury Cape Cod and ranch-style homes, most of which were built in the 1950s during the postwar suburban boom. Brick exteriors are common throughout the neighborhood, and many homes have been well-maintained or updated over the years. Some still feature sunken living rooms and layouts with plenty of windows, while others have been renovated with modern kitchens and finished rec rooms. Hardwood floors, fenced yards and oversized garages are also common features.
The median sale price is around $300,000, with listings generally ranging from the lower $100,000s to the upper $300,000s. This tends to make Gra-Ram the least expensive option in the area compared to Greenfield, Greendale, Clayton Crest and Copernicus Park.
South 27th Street is the go-to route for everyday errands and also has stops for the Milwaukee County Transit System's PurpleLine. For getting around the region, Interstates 94 and 41 run together along the North-South Freeway and provide a direct connection to downtown Milwaukee, about 10 miles away. With regular bus service and sidewalks throughout much of the area, getting around without a car is a practical option for many residents.
The South 27th Street corridor has grocery stores and a wide range of services just minutes from the neighborhood. For bigger shopping trips, nearby Southridge Mall offers dozens of national retailers and chain restaurants. Local eateries are a big part of the surrounding area as well, covering everything from quick bites to sit-down meals:
Kilmer Park, also known as Gra-Ram Playfield, has a baseball diamond, tennis courts and basketball courts. A short distance away, Copernicus Park spans about 20 acres and features a wooded area with a creek and winding trails. It also includes a playground and a basketball court.
Gra-Ram is served by Milwaukee Public Schools, which uses an open enrollment process rather than automatic assignment. Many elementary students can walk to the Garland School near the center of the neighborhood. St. Charles Borromeo, a private Catholic institution, is also in Gra-Ram’s boundaries.
While most of the Garden District's events don't happen in Gra-Ram, they're still close-by. The Garden District Farmer's Market and Garden District Craft Fair are two local favorites.
