Maitland Park has access to transit, jobs and plenty of parks

The quiet neighborhood streets of Maitland Park are sandwiched between the bustling Interstate 41 and Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport. While you might not expect air traffic and midcentury suburban homes to blend harmoniously, people set down roots here for the convenience and employment opportunities that surround these southern Milwaukee hubs. Big-box shopping, nature trails and parks where youth baseball teams play are all close to home. You can easily hop on the interstate, a bus or an Amtrak train to get into Milwaukee or to start the much longer trip into Chicago.

Midcentury homes mostly on the west side of the neighborhood

Ranch-style houses line Maitland Park’s suburban blocks and cul-de-sacs, built around the midcentury. “The east side of Maitland Park is all commercial and industrial; the west side is all residential and a park,” says Robert Arnold, a Realtor with Realty Executives Integrity who’s served the Milwaukee metro area for 23 years. “It’s wedged between the expressway and the airport, so it’s kind of like an island. But, it’s a nice island.” Prices range from the mid-$200,000s to the upper $300,000s. Maitland Park has a median single-family home price in the upper $200,000s. That’s lower than nearby Copernicus Park, Goldman Park and Clayton Crest. It’s higher than College Heights and on par with Mitchell West.

Close to a top-rated Milwaukee Public high school

Maitland Park is served by Milwaukee Public Schools. Through MPS, students attend assigned neighborhood schools or use the district’s choice program to go to other attendance-area, charter and specialty schools. Kids can apply to nearby Ronald Wilson Reagan College Preparatory High School, a top-rated specialty school offering advanced academics through the International Baccalaureate program. You can also send kids to out-of-district, charter and private schools through Wisconsin’s statewide open enrollment and choice initiatives.

What it's like living near the airport and interstate

“Airplanes come pretty much right overhead. But it’s like living near train tracks; after a couple of months, you don’t even notice they’re there,” Arnold says. Many nearby industrial businesses and Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport are employment hubs for residents of Maitland Park and its neighboring communities. You can walk to a handful of Milwaukee County Transit System bus stops, but locals typically rely on cars to get around. Interstate 41 borders Maitland Park, starting commuters on a roughly 10-mile drive to East Town. That drive can take between 15 minutes to 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Chicago is about 80 miles, or two hours, in the opposite direction. You can also catch an Amtrak train to Chicago from the airport’s station.
