A suburb bordered by industrial space
The word “Graceland” evokes the stately image of Elvis Presley’s Memphis mansion, but Milwaukee’s Graceland is defined by its suburban homes where locals come to settle down. “The homes are cute and quaint, with affordable prices that are good for new homebuyers,” says Realtor Angela Walters, who sells property in the neighborhood with eXp Realty. “The small houses are easy to maintain, and if the homes are dated, it’s not going to be expensive to update them.” Around 3,000 Milwaukeeans live in Graceland, mostly along straight, gridded streets in the neighborhood’s western section, with Graceland Cemetery taking up most of the eastern half. Graceland’s southern section is home to warehouse-based employers along Woolworth Avenue, including packaging supplier Keiding Inc. and lighting services provider LMS Holding.

Ranch styles, bi-levels and Cape Cods
The neighborhood’s suburban streets are lined with sidewalks and mostly single-family homes with large yards. The neighborhood’s old-growth trees drop colorful leaves on the front yards each autumn. Most homeowners here enjoy private driveways and detached garages, and a few dozen lots in the westernmost section are especially large thanks to the ample space between 56th and 58th streets. Ranch-style homes are the most common architectural style here, each featuring a unique exterior design — some with rubble masonry foundations, others with brightly colored windowpanes, gutters and other highlights. Most were built in the 1950s and ‘60s, while a few Cape Cod homes in the neighborhood have stood since the 1930s. The neighborhood’s bi-level single-family homes and townhouses were built in the 1960s and ‘70s. The median home in Graceland sells for roughly $50,000 less than Milwaukee’s median home price. The neighborhood’s houses are mostly priced from $150,000 to $275,000, with some even slightly over $300,000. North 43rd Street and West Mill Road are the main thoroughfares, and residents who live along those deal with higher noise levels than the rest of the neighborhood. Some houses at the lower end of the price range require renovations. Because the neighborhood was built on low land, some parts have a higher risk of flooding.

Drinks at Regal Begal and Jamaican food at Coconut Bowl
Graceland offers easy access to several local businesses and chain retailers. Just off West Green Tea Road, Regal Begal is a dive bar and hookah lounge where mixed drinks and hip-hop beats flow. The bar also hosts an annual back-to-school fundraiser for local students. On the neighborhood’s south end, Coconut Bowl has a 12-lane bowling alley where games cost less than $5 per person. Coconut Bowl's menu has authentic Jamaican eats, from brown stew chicken to jerk everything (chicken, egg rolls, tacos). Within 2 miles of the neighborhood along West Mill Road, there are multiple retailers, from Phongsavan Market Place, an Asian food hall and market, to Walgreens and a Save A Lot grocery store.
Clara Barton Elementary School and Green Tree Preparatory Academy
Because of Milwaukee’s school choice policy, parents apply to send their children to schools throughout the city. On the neighborhood’s northern border, Clara Barton Elementary School welcomes kindergarten through fifth-grade students and has earned the honor of “PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) School of Distinction” from the state education department. Morse Middle School for the Gifted and Talented is 3 miles west of the neighborhood and focuses its curriculum on STEM education and college readiness. James Madison Academic Campus high school is 3 miles west of the neighborhood. All three schools have C-minus Niche ratings. Green Tree Preparatory Academy serves middle and high school students on the neighborhood’s north end.
Wyrick Park and Havenwoods State Forest
Public outdoor spaces are within walking distance of Graceland. Wyrick Park is just north of the neighborhood, across Green Tree Road. This public green space has nearly 18 acres of open field and a tot-friendly playground. The similarly sized Schoenecker Park sits to the southeast and features a full-sized baseball diamond, plus three smaller fields where the Wauwatosa Milwaukee Little League hosts games for ages 4 to 16. Beyond the trees bordering Schoenecker lies Havenwoods State Forest. This preserve has 237 acres of grasslands, woodlands and wetlands that are home to several species of reptiles and amphibians, not to mention over 6 miles of trails. “I think the biggest draw to Havenwoods is the overall size of it,” says Angela Vickio, who oversees Milwaukee’s three Wisconsin State Parks with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Vickio adds that hikers can choose from trails of varying lengths depending on how big of a hike they are in the mood for. Within the neighborhood, Graceland Cemetery is over 100 years old and provides paved pathways where some folks take evening strolls.
