Grover Heights is the epicenter of excitement on Milwaukee’s Far North Side, with one of the city’s best high schools, two riverside parks, restaurants and breweries within blocks.
The neighborhood is primarily industrial, with a handful of homes scattered around its southern section, mainly wood-framed duplexes and bungalows from the 1930s or earlier. Most of the latter have stout facades with vinyl, wood or aluminum siding and jerkinhead roofs, while a few have predominantly brick or stone exteriors. Though the average house here costs less than $100,000, you might spend up to $200,000 for a well-maintained four-bedroom home.
Adding to the neighborhood’s convenience is its proximity to two expansive parks offering direct access to the Milwaukee River: Lincoln Park and Estabrook Park, which sit on either side of the interstate. Lincoln Park comprises 313 acres north of Grover Heights and offers a dynamic array of outdoor amenities, including a nine-hole golf course, sports facilities and the David F. Schulz Aquatic Center, one of northern Milwaukee’s only public water parks. “It’s great for all ages,” says Friends of Lincoln Park board member Anne Stadler Vaillancourt. “The closest little water park, I think, would be in Greenfield.” Meanwhile, Estabrook Park’s 125 acres run alongside the river, so visitors can enjoy waterside views from the park’s walking trails, skatepark and 18-hole disc golf course.
During the warmer months, you can watch the water rush past while enjoying a cold one at the Estabrook Beer Garden. Seated on a bluff overlooking a waterfall, this social spot in the park serves over a dozen beers, wines, ciders and seltzers, along with bratwurst, soft pretzels and other German-style munchies. Beer lovers in Grover Heights are also less than a five-minute drive from Sprecher Brewing Co., which operates just south of Lincoln Park. Billed as Milwaukee’s oldest craft brewery, Sprecher has concocted specialty beers and sodas for over 50 years. Every Friday, it welcomes locals to enjoy “Family Date Nights,” where you can snag drinks, pizza and a massive pretzel for a single fee. Cross beneath the interstate to the east, and you’ll find Solly’s Grille, a James Beard Award-winning eatery open since 1936. “They’re famous for their ‘butter burgers,’ and they serve breakfast as well,” Stadler Vaillancourt says. Directly east of Grover Heights is Riverworks Center, a robust commercial corridor where you can run errands at Walmart, Walgreens and several other big-name retailers. Grocery runs are easy here, too, thanks to Outpost Natural Foods and Aldi.
One school operates in Grover Heights, the private Messmer High School, offering a Catholic education for grades nine through 12. High schoolers are also about a four-minute drive from Rufus King International High School, which has earned an outstanding A-minus score from Niche. Its International Baccalaureate (IB) program has made it one of Milwaukee’s most sought-after schools for over 40 years, attracting over 1,400 students from every part of the city. Younger public school students can attend Keefe Avenue Elementary, which scores a D-plus, and Andrew S. Douglas Middle, which scores a C-minus.
Grover Heights sits at the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Capitol Drive, with Interstate 43 running north-to-south through the neighborhood. This offers considerable convenience to its less than 400 residents, offering a 10-minute drive to downtown Milwaukee via the freeway and an even shorter trip to the shores of Lake Michigan.
