A blue-collar community with access to natural amenities
With a public greenspace that takes up nearly a quarter of the neighborhood (and a prominent state forest across the street), McGovern Park makes it easy to enjoy the great outdoors while not straying too far from home. Gridded and nicely shaded residential streets comprise most of McGovern Park, while its eponymous green space makes up the northwest quadrant. "It's a good place for first-time homebuyers," says Realtor Elizabeth Mitchell, who sells houses in the neighborhood with Keller Williams Realty-Milwaukee Southwest. "It's a blue-collar community where a lot of the residents work in factories and warehouses in the city."

Single and multi-family housing developed in the mid-century
Over 3,000 Milwaukeeans live in the neighborhood in homes with convenient sidewalk access; many also enjoy their own driveways and detached garages. The streets are straight, and sidewalks are shaded by old-growth trees. Folks often chat with their neighbors from front porches as they pass by while on evening walks, and in the summer, children ride their bikes down the quiet streets. About 60% of residents own their houses, and the median single-family home price is less than half of Milwaukee's median single-family home price. Two-bedroom bungalows from the early 1950s sell for as low as $70,000, and three-bedroom bungalows from the same era sell for as high as $150,000. Multi-family homes sell between $120,000 and $190,000. These are occupied by renters. Simple Cape Cods from the '50s sell for as low as $140,000, and four-bedroom New Traditional-style houses from the '40s sell for as high as $225,000.

A public greenspace with sporting facilities and a senior center
All residents are within a mile walking distance of the neighborhood's public greenspace, McGovern Park. This park invites residents of all ages. The 61-acre recreational spot allows teens to play pickup basketball while their little siblings engage their imaginations on the playground. All the while, parents can walk their pets around the park's sprawling multi-use field. Local leagues practice and play scrimmages at the softball diamond. The park's senior center hosts regular lunches and dinners. After meals, seniors bond over friendly games of pool or practice therapeutic activities like quilting and woodworking. The center also holds exercise programs, including a very popular tai chi self-defense class. This calming martial art is commonly referred to as "meditation in motion." Meanwhile, the expansive Havenwoods State Forest covers 237 acres directly north of the neighborhood. "We have forest, prairie and wetland habitats here with over 6 miles of walking trails," says Property Supervisor Angela Vickio. "Our nature center has also had a lot of improvements done over the last year."
