Mount Mary

Mid-century homes in all sorts of styles
Mount Mary has a post-World War II era feel, with almost all of the neighborhood houses dating between 1940 and 1969. Straight rows of brick ranches, Cape Cods and National-style homes with two to three bedrooms are fronted by trim yards and even sidewalks. Communal alleys behind these houses hold garages and parking spaces for residents to supplement on-street parking options. South of Mount Mary University, the streets have a slight bend, opening lots wider to make space for mid-size, four-bedroom Colonial Revival houses. According to Ryan Stefaniak, a real estate agent with The Stefaniak Group who has listings in the area, “It’s surprising the variety of home styles available in the neighborhood even though the area surrounding Mount Mary is small, and they’re all pretty reasonable in price.” Prices range between $210,000 and $480,000.Mount Mary University and surrounding K-12 education
Mount Mary University, a private Catholic all-female school, occupies most of the neighborhood. It earns a B-minus on Niche and is a Hispanic-serving institution. While student housing around the university is common, families also choose to live in the area. Young children can attend McKinley Elementary School, which has an A rating on Niche and is the 14th-best public elementary school in Milwaukee County. Whitman Middle School has a B-plus on Niche and is the 13th-best public middle school in Milwaukee County. High schoolers can attend Wauwatosa West High School, which has a scholarship foundation that recognizes and awards scholarships to graduating Wauwatosa West students with post-secondary plans. The school has an A rating on Niche.Nearby parks on either side of the Menomonee River
Most of Mount Mary’s green space is reserved for the university campus. However, there are a few parks and outdoor areas nearby where locals get fresh air. Menomonee River runs along the western border of the neighborhood, and on the other side of the river is Blue Mound Golf And Country Club. A little over 1 mile east is Cooper Park, a mid-sized green space with a playground, children’s wading pool and two ball fields. The park also hosts a traveling beer garden in the summer months. Hartung Park is a little over 1 mile north and is a hilly wildflower park with winding hiking trails, a children’s playground and a seasonal farmers' market. A mile west of Hartung is Currie Park, the largest free-to-the-public park near Mount Mary. During the summer, Currie Park operates mainly as a golf course, but when snow settles over Milwaukee, residents flock to Currie Park’s hills to go sledding.Sibling restaurants and flavorful food trucks
The neighborhood café, Miss Molly's, serves scratch-made baked goods and seasonally inspired dishes, making it a go-to for breakfast and lunch. Sully's Sandwiches on 92nd and Center is the sister company of Miss Molly’s. The restaurant is a sleek and colorful sandwich shop locals love to frequent at lunchtime. Food trucks are also popular in the area for a quick bite; Fatty Patty serves up fresh burgers and gyros made with halal meat, while Get Them While They're Hot Tamales offers savory or sweet tamales along with tacos, street corn and other Mexican cuisine favorites. Mount Mary residents lean on Bunzel's Old-Fashioned Meat Market as the area grocers. Bunzel's has been independently owned for four generations and counting, offering specialty cuts of meat and award-winning beef jerky. However, on the other side of Interstate 94 ALT are Whole Foods Market and Meijer, which offer a wider selection and more brand names. For retail needs, Mayfair Shopping Mall is a spacious shopping complex 1 mile away with department stores, eateries and a movie theater.Minutes away from Milwaukee's major areas
Mount Mary residents generally get around by car, but plenty of bus stops are along West Burleigh Street. I-94 ALT is only 2 miles away, and Interstate 41 is 1 mile past that. “Mount Mary is centrally located, so it’s easy to jump on the freeway and head west or drive to downtown Milwaukee to make it to a Bucks game,” says Stefaniak. “Mount Mary is about 10 to 15 minutes from most major areas.” It’s also 17 miles from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport.
