Homes in North Meadow cost less than half the city average
North Meadow is a highly opportune neighborhood to own property on Milwaukee’s Northwest Side, with homes that, on average, cost less than half what you’d typically pay anywhere else in the city.
Most residents live in condos, apartments or retirement housing
Multi-family housing makes up most of North Meadow, its 3,000-plus residents split between several apartment buildings and retirement living in the western section and The Woodlands Condos to the east. The latter covers about 45 acres and features hundreds of multi-level, two-to-four-bedroom units built in the early 1970s. It centers around a large, well-kept playfield and welcomes residents to enjoy time on the basketball courts and playground. A handful of side-by-side duplexes sit north of The Woodlands, alongside a few single-family Colonials, Cape Cods and ranch-style homes built in the early 2000s. These can cost up to the low $300,000s, which might get you a three-bedroom construction with over 3,300 square feet and an attached garage. Meanwhile, condos start in the $40,000 range, with the average home in the neighborhood costing about $68,000.
Nearby public schools offer tech-focused and creative programs
North Meadow is home to Greater Holy Temple Christian Academy. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has awarded four out of five stars to this private school, which accommodates about 470 kindergarten through eighth grade students. A few Milwaukee Public Schools operate within 10 minutes by car, including Henry David Thoreau School. This school also welcomes kindergarten through eighth grade students and provides them with a technology-heavy curriculum and various creative clubs. Though only offering kindergarten through fifth grade classes, Lowell P. Goodrich School is a few minutes closer to North Meadow. And Vincent High School of Agricultural Sciences invites ninth through 12th graders to interact one-on-one with animal and plant life.
Nearby YMCA offers camps, a pool and inclusive baseball
Younger residents who’d like to venture beyond the Woodlands playfield can walk just a few minutes east to the YMCA Northwest Early Childhood Education Center, which hosts day camps and other kid-oriented activities on its wooded, 53-acre campus. Visitors can also go wild on the playground or cool off in the pool, which includes a winding waterslide. The campus is also home to the Miracle League of Milwaukee, a Little League that welcomes differently abled children to play on a specially designed, rubberized baseball diamond every summer. Meanwhile, North Meadow is less than a five-minute drive from the Mequon Nature Preserve, a 500-plus-acre expanse where visitors can traverse trails, watch birds and even tap maple trees for syrup. “We also have a 40-foot observation tower that everyone gets a chance to go up on,” says Ecological Outreach Manager Amanda Neimon. “You can really see the whole preserve and even downtown Milwaukee on a nice day.”
Locally owned restaurants and grocery stores are close by
When you feel like eating out, several locally owned eateries are in and just outside North Meadow. Thai Bangkok sits in the neighborhood’s southeast corner and serves authentic Thai dishes in generous helpings, from noodle-based dishes to various curries. Head a couple of miles east on Brown Deer Road, and you’ll hit Family Table, a diner dating back to the 1980s that serves all three meals. If you’d prefer to make something at home, load up on groceries at Walmart Supercenter or Aldi on either side of Family Table.
Interstate access makes commuting to Milwaukee convenient
The Northwest Side is filled with offices, warehouses and other employers. Workplaces near North Meadow include packaging supplier WestRock and printing company Olympus Group, just south of the neighborhood. And if you work in the city, you can typically get to downtown Milwaukee in less than half an hour via Interstates 41 and 94.
