Midcentury charm in the heart of Milwaukee
The Milwaukee neighborhood of Rufus King was home to baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron he played for the Braves in the 1950s and surprisingly it has retained much of the quintessential midcentury vibe it had back then. Single-family homes and duplexes from the 1920s line quiet tree-dotted streets. Schools, parks and churches are walkable, as is the strip of small warehouses that line the neighborhood’s northern border. There are several main thoroughfares, but they aren’t especially busy. Yet, this sleepy suburb is just 6 miles from downtown and the beaches along Whitefish Bay.

Prices range from $63,000 for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom fixer-upper to $245,000 for a three- or four-bedroom with recent renovations and a finished basement. As for crime, Rufus King scores a 5 out of 10 on the CAP Index, slightly above the national average of 4.

Rufus King is mainly residential, but a few retailers are scattered throughout the community, including the iconic Mr. Perkins Family Restaurant, which has been serving classic diner fare and soul food since 1969. This family-owned staple is so well-known that prominent athletes like Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley have stopped by. “We’re starting to get more soul food restaurants, but this is probably one of the first in town,” Jaworski says. “They have a long tradition and a huge clientele, probably up to the third and fourth generation.” For shopping, residents run weekend errands at Walmart and other major retailers in Williamsburg Heights, a few miles east.
