Servite Woods
Suburban Neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Milwaukee County 53223
Condominium complexes from the 1970s
Secluded multi-family living is what Servite Woods does best. About 50% of the neighborhood's 1,000 or so population are renters, but for those looking to own, there are two condominium complexes to choose from. Whispering Hills, built in 1973, has a central pool and prices ranging from $100,000 to $130,000. The namesake Servite Woods complex was built in 1974. "It's very quiet, and the grounds are well kept," says Servite Woods Homes Association President Roger Neal. "I would call it a hidden gem." Residents can enjoy heated underground parking, a community pool, the clubhouse and other conveniences. A single-level, two-bedroom condo in the neighborhood might cost less than $70,000, while a three-bedroom townhouse with 1,400-plus square feet might reach the $140,000 mark.Out of suburbia, into nature
In the Servite Woods complex, a paved trail loop runs through protected green space. Though the walk only takes about 15 minutes, locals enjoy having fresh air and a place to take the dog out so close to home. For a full day outdoors, locals can head 2 miles north to Mequon Nature Preserve, which spans 510 acres of wetlands, prairies and hardwood forest. A central observation tower is often used for birdwatching, and kids enjoy nature-themed scavenger hunts. Kohl Park adjoins Mequon to the south and covers over 270 acres, including the large Kohl Farm Community Garden and a tree-heavy hiking path.Open enrollment schools with subsidized private options
Milwaukee Public Schools, like all districts in Wisconsin, has open enrollment. Some nearby options include Henry David Thoreau School, which serves kindergarten through eighth-grade students. Niche gives the technology-focused school a C-minus rating. High school students are less than a 3-mile drive from Vincent High School of Agricultural Sciences to the southwest. Here, students get hands-on experience that can translate into careers in animal science, sustainable farming and more. GreatSchools gives the school a 1 out of 10. Within the neighborhood, The City School is a private option for kindergarten through eighth grade and provides free lunches in the summer. In Milwaukee, parents with specific income requirements can apply for free tuition to private schools like The City School.Granville Blues Festival and foodie events
The Granville Business Improvement District (BID) is a local non-profit that strives to attract new local businesses and increase community engagement. Servite Woods borders the shopping center where the non-profit holds most of its events, including the Granville Blues Festival. The festival celebrates Blues musicians and features food vendors, craft booths and interactive demonstrations. Granville BID also partners with The Neighborhood Kitchen, a shared professional kitchen space for entrepreneurial chefs. During the summer, the Tasty Tuesdays event allows these small businesses to showcase their innovative flavors, drawing in hungry workers from the surrounding business park. "It's an extremely supportive environment. Last Tuesday, someone was selling cookies with her niece, and she sold out of everything," says Suzy Wagner, the owner of Neighborhood Kitchen. "Granville is definitely a place with great opportunities for entrepreneurs to come and grow. Eight businesses were involved when we bought the building — now there are over 50."Industrial park offers job opportunities
Servite Woods is located in Milwaukee's most prominent industrial area. Surrounding the neighborhood are manufacturing companies, corporate offices, lawn care services and car dealerships. For those who work in these options, a walk home could be as short as 15 minutes. State Route 181 has sidewalks and a bus lane, making it convenient for commuters. But, it does bring some noise to the homes that sit nearby. The railroad track to the south can bring noise as well. Downtown Milwaukee is a much longer commute, with the 15-mile drive taking 20 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic.Upcoming plans for a multi-use commercial district
The former Northridge Mall used to be Granville's main retail attraction. Following its closure, the city began planning in 2017 to transform the empty mall into a multi-use development, Granville Station. In collaboration with the Granville Business Improvement District, the Milwaukee Department of City Development hopes to draw in local businesses, housing and landscaped parks. But, the mall's demolition is slated for completion in 2025, so this revitalization is years down the line. For now, residents of Servite Woods enjoy several strip malls within a mile radius, which are home to a Walmart, Aldi and Dollar Tree. There are plenty of chain restaurants, and the locally-owned Mr. B's Lounge gets busy for live music Fridays.Historic church and faith-based ways to give back
The oldest landmark of the neighborhood is the St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church, which has a stone exterior and stained-glass windows that date back to 1855. The church plays a role in the community, with a food pantry that opens every other week and a group of parishioners who pack food bags for the non-profit Guest House. It also has several community garden beds. An associated faith-based school for kindergarten through eighth grade is four miles south. In addition, a faith-based thrift store, St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store, opened in 2024, less than a mile from the neighborhood.
