To Milwaukeeans, Sherman Park can mean many things – even to its own residents. Sherman Park is just one of six neighborhoods comprising the eponymous Sherman Park Community Association. Much like its partner neighborhoods, Sherman Park is known for a blend of residents from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds who live in some of the city’s true architectural gems from the early 20th century. It also finds itself undergoing reinvention in the aftermath of civil unrest that shook the neighborhood in 2016, ushering in new businesses intended to uplift their surrounding community. “It’s a healthy, growing neighborhood with a diverse group of individuals,” says Sherman Park Grocery Store owner Maurice Wince.

Fond du Lac Avenue, MCTS buses connect to rest of Milwaukee
Fond du Lac Avenue, one of Milwaukee’s main traffic arteries towards downtown, forms the neighborhood’s northeastern border. The convenience of the location – there's also a nearby railway switching yard – explains why the nearby A.O. Smith Corporation plant employed many in the neighborhood for decades until it was sold in 1997 and closed in 2006. The Milwaukee County Transit System bus depot is located in Sherman Park, and three routes run through the neighborhood: the Fond du Lac BlueLine, the 30 Bus on Sherman Boulevard and the 22 Bus on Center Street.

Historic houses are Sherman Park's trademark
Nearly every home in Sherman Park was built between 1910 and 1930. The homes along North Sherman Blvd. and Grant Blvd. are part of historic districts, with designs ranging from bungalows with large front porches to brick-and-stone Tudors, American Foursquare and Craftsman. On other blocks in the neighborhood, two-story duplexes are predominant. Homes in the historic districts range from $174,000-$294,000. Businesses new and old reflect neighborhood growth
The 2022 arrival of Sherman Park Grocery Store was intended to change the neighborhood’s status as a “food desert.” The neighborhood owned and operated store relies on volunteer staffing to keep fresh food affordable. “Access to fresh fruits and vegetables was absent the [previous] 20 years,” Wince says. “Our impact and reach has been tremendous.” Sherman Phoenix is another recent addition to the neighborhood. Built in the space previously occupied by a bank that rioters burned down in 2016, its name and the bold mural along its top wall is a very literal homage to the neighborhood’s rise from the flames. The Phoenix is the home space for two dozen minority-owned businesses and features monthly pop-up marketplaces to serve dozens more. And then there’s an old favorite: Reynold’s Pasty Shop, which has baked and served savory meat pies in the same locations since 1956 using recipes from the Cornwall region of England.
The Sherman Phoenix is the heart of the Sherman Park neighborhood and should not me missed.

Namesake park provides plenty for community
The neighborhood shares a name with the 21-acre park that serves as its anchor. Sherman Park is home to the Mary Ryan Boys and Girls Club, which offers programs for kindergartners through eighth graders. There are also basketball courts, tennis courts, a softball diamond, playground, wading pool and two picnic shelters.

MPS serves local students
Milwaukee Public Schools serve Sherman Park, with students attending K-8 Townsend Street School or Clarke Street School, both of which receive a C-minus grade from Niche. Milwaukee College Prep, a K-8 charter school with campuses on 36th and 38th streets, is also available to neighborhood residents and receives a C-minus rating. High school students attending Washington High School of Information Technology. Washington is a longtime boys basketball power, reaching the state finals eight times and winning four titles since 1985. Washington has a D-plus Niche rating.

Fall Fest adding to sense of renewal
The neighborhood’s spirit of togetherness and reinvention is also seen with the Sherman Park Fall Fest, which was held for the second time in 2023. The family-friendly event, hosted by the Milwaukee County Park Foundation, features food, games, and activities the weekend before Halloween.
Crime still an issue in much of Sherman Park
Crime is a concern in many parts of Sherman Park. In 2022, the Milwaukee Police Department cited Sherman Park as one of 15 city neighborhoods with a “disproportionate” number of homicides and non-fatal shootings. Homicides decreased by 60% in 2023, and overall crime went down by 6%.
