Close ties in Wahl Park

In 2021, Wahl Park's anchoring namesake greenspace was renamed Harriet Tubman Park to reflect the neighborhood's historically Black community. Tubman was chosen for her activism and because she passed through the Milwaukee and Madison area, once integral parts of the Underground Railroad. Some neighbors have lived in Wahl Park for decades, leading to strong community ties. "My client has lived here for over 20 years," says realtor Dryden Schardt of First Weber Realtors. "She says the neighbors are great and very talkative. They keep each other in the loop about what goes on in the block."

Established Cape Cods

Wahl Park's gridded blocks mostly feature modest Cape Cods. However, stone Tudors, wood-framed bungalows and variously sized ranch-style homes also appear frequently, as do side-by-side, townhouse-style duplexes. "It's pretty clean - not a lot of trash lying around," says Schardt. As for new development: "There aren't many vacant lots, they are all pretty developed," he adds. "It is on the more affordable side. You could move right in at $130,000 and do a little TLC if you wanted to." According to him, most homes are in the $150,000 range, but a home needing serious renovation might go for as little as $50,000. The priciest are around $200,000, which might fetch four bedrooms and a fully renovated interior. The community is facing its challenges, with local reviews shedding a painful light on shootings in the area. Wahl Park's Cap Index score reflects this, with a homicide rating of 9 out of 10.

Heading to downtown Milwaukee in 8 miles

Downtown Milwaukee's fun, including its art museums, can be had within 8 miles. Wahl Park's connection to Route 145, just west, makes the drive quicker. Milwaukee Public Transit provides car-less options. Milwaukee is prone to moderate flooding – as Lincoln Creek passes through Wahl Park, it may be more prone than other areas. Heavy snowfall is also a reality here, and the city strives to clear streets within 24 hours of a heavy snowfall. It also requires residents to clear snow from their sidewalks in the same amount of time.

Beginnings at Congress Elementary School

Students attend the Milwaukee Public School District. Some cross the creek to attend class at Congress Elementary School, serving kindergarten through eighth grade. The school has received above-average marks from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, but it's rated a D plus by Niche. High schoolers may attend Milwaukee Marshall High School, which maintains a C minus. It offers dual-enrollment coursework in graphic design, engineering and other areas. Meanwhile, the K-12 Barack Obama School of Career and Technical Education provides training in trades like welding and woodworking.

Hup's Pizza is a hidden gem

Local businesses and restaurants mix with familiar chains, like McDonalds, a short walk from homes in Wahl Park on West Hampton Avenue. The most legendary eatery is Hups Pizza, a can't-miss roadside shack that's served slices of cheesy goodness for over 50 years. "Hup's Pizza is a hidden gem in the city — one of, if not the top pizza place here in Milwaukee," says community realtor David Dunn of EXP Realty LLC. Aby African Hair Braiding is just a short walk from the pizza place and has been a trusted community salon for over a decade. Midtown Center, about a mile southeast, at the intersection of North 60th and Capitol Streets, has a few chains, like a Planet Fitness and a Pick 'n Save for groceries. Sundays at Harriet Tubman Park

Harriet Tubman Park is in many residents' backyards. It's the site of grassroots events like the easter egg hunt and church services every Sunday. Most of its acreage is open and grassy, perfect for pickup soccer games or tossing the frisbee. Two basketball courts are available in the northern section, along with a playground and a wading pool. Just south, a trail winds around Lincoln Creek, offering a babbling backdrop for walks and jogs. Additionally, several large green spaces orbit the neighborhood. Havenwoods State Forest is just 2 miles north – it's Wisconsin's only urban forest, with over 230 acres containing ponds amid woodlands and 6 miles of trails. Waterside parks are just east, including Klode Park, 5 miles away, with a small sandy beach.
