Wick Field
Urban Pioneer Neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Milwaukee County 53208
Fresh paint jobs and pristine landscaping
With a limited number of homes in the neighborhood and a high level of desirability, it's no surprise that houses sell after only a few days on the market. "Each of the houses I sold there had plenty of showings and multiple offers," Christenson says. "Also, many of the bungalows are owner-occupied, and the neighborhood has more owners than other nearby neighborhoods." Small Colonial Revivals with Dutch influences are on the gridded streets, tucked between the popular bungalows from the 1920s. Rocking chairs and hammocks are on many front porches, and contrasting shutters with fresh paint are standard. Though the yards are small, less than one-fifth of an acre, owners have no issue using their space with mowed lawns, pristine landscaping and garden beds overflowing with native plants. The houses on the western end of the neighborhood fetch slightly higher prices and range between $220,000 and $350,000. While the houses on the east side are similar in style and size, they are in the neighborhood's industrial sector and range from $180,000 to $240,000. No matter where one buys their home in Wick Field, it will likely be less expensive than a home across Vliet Street. "The Heights (Washington Heights) is more popular, but you can get the same house size and style for less money in Wick Field," Christenson says.A park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted
Wick Playfield has seven baseball and softball diamonds, including one central one with stadium seating and lights for evening games that is currently getting a facelift. The park also has eight tennis courts, a playground and handball courts. Hawthorne Glen Nature Preserve is to the west, across North Hawley Road. Milwaukee Recreation operates the 25-acre space that offers residents, including students at nearby schools, the opportunity to enjoy up-close interactions with various critters and plant life along heavily wooded trails. "Our field trip topics are varied, from bugs to animal adaptation to geology," says Harthorne Glen naturalist Anne Duffy. "We also do cross-country skiing in the winter." Washington Park is one of the oldest parks in the Milwaukee County Parks system and was originally home to the Milwaukee County Zoo. The animals were the main attraction until the zoo closed in 1958, but being designed by the same park architect as Central Park in New York City, Washington Park has seen no drop in interest since then. Basketball courts, a public pool and splash pad, walking trails around ponds and an amphitheater keep residents coming back time after time.Specialized programs at a top-rated high school
Under Milwaukee Public Schools, city students can choose the schools they would like to attend, regardless of neighborhood boundaries. Parents who wish to keep their young students close, with the option to walk to school, often choose Neeskara School. The school is rated a C-minus and offers free breakfast and lunch to all students, regardless of family income. Milwaukee School of Languages serves middle and high school students and is rated a B-minus. Another high school option that is only 2 miles east is Milwaukee High School of the Arts. The C-plus school has additional acceptance requirements, unlike most that only require an application. The competitive arts high school is rated as the best high school for the arts in Wisconsin.Getting together with residents from nearby Washington Heights
Given its proximity to Washington Heights, Wick Field gives its residents access to some of the large festivals and events held by the Washington Heights Neighborhood Association. The Annual Run Back to School event is a run that starts and ends at Wick Playfield. Children, parents and teachers run through nearby Washington Park on their journey before the beginning of the school year. Wick Playfield is also home to a Kick or Treat Halloween kickball tournament. Costumes are encouraged for running around the bases. Many festivals and events happen on Vliet Street, including the biannual Art Walk and Bastille Day West. In the middle of July, locals come together to celebrate French culture and history with authentic cuisine, arts and entertainment. Those looking for an artistic outlet can take a class at Square One Art Glass. The shop has glassblowing sessions by appointment only that range between $65 to $150. The price includes the class, all materials and the final product made.Main streets around, but not through, the neighborhood
The neighborhood has on- and off-ramps to Route 175 and is bordered by two other main roads for easy access to nearby amenities. The streets, especially Route 175, bring some noise of traffic and horns to the area, but the residential streets on the west are in a quiet bubble. "Because the neighborhood is locked, the only people driving through are those who live there," Christenson says. "There is a high level of desirability since no one is using the residential part of the neighborhood to get from point A to point B." Buses stop along West Vliet Street and West State Street and head in every direction, including 5 miles east to Downtown Milwaukee. The nearest hospital, Froedtert Hospital, is three miles west, and Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is 12 miles southeast.A giant bookshelf on Vliet Street
Except for Spitfires on State, a sports bar known for its many wing flavors and happy hour, Wick Field lacks shops and restaurants. Fortunately, a plethora of dining and unique stores are along Vliet Street. Established in 1945, Caradaro Club Pizza is one of the oldest operating pizzerias in town and is perhaps the hardest to miss, with its giant teacup and saucer wedged into the roof. A florist, gift shop, beauty salons and bars are along the road that divides Wick Field from Washington Heights. West of the neighborhood, a short quarter-mile walk from the houses near North Hawley Road, is Rainbow Booksellers. The children's bookstore has young adult classics and new releases from local writers, but it's most notable for the incredible mural outside the building. A three-dimensional mural makes those walking by look like a trinket between the books on a giant's bookshelf. Metro Market, Metcalfe's Market and Outpost Natural Foods grocery stores are less than two miles west on State Street.
