A neighborhood with the best of the outdoors and city amenities
Minneapolis is known for its parks, trails and Chain of Lakes, which are considered some of the city's best features. In Cedar-Isles-Dean, waterfront fun is easy to find as the neighborhood is bordered by three lakes: Cedar Lake to the north, the Lake of Isles to the east and Bde Maka Ska to the south.
Realtor John Brekken, who grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis, says the lakes are a huge draw. "The love for nature and the outdoors is what really brings people together here, despite our notoriously bad weather," he said. "Even though we have rough winters, when you find yourself here, you'll see that people are out and about for all four seasons."
Although the outdoors plays a big role in the neighborhood's identity, that's not all Cedar-Isles-Dean has to offer. Downtown Minneapolis is a 4-mile drive away, and Uptown, with its trendy restaurants, cozy bookstores and boutiques, is closer, just over a mile east on the far side of Bde Maka Ska.
Cedar Isles Dean is located south of Downtown and is nestled within the chain of lakes.
Residents enjoy the tree-lined trails with a view of the lake at Bde Maka Ska.
The Loch Ness kinetic sculpture
is located near the south shore of Cedar Lake.
Bde Maka Ska offers a large swimming beach on the north end of the lake.
Wheel Fun Rentals offers the largest selection of pedal boats, kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards.

Shopping & dining at Uptown
"The heart of the neighborhood is residential, but the outskirts are surrounded by shopping, dining, and retail." Brekken recommends several local spots, including Kenwood and Red Cow for dinner, and Yum! Kitchen & Bakery for desserts. "I don't have a go-to order for any of these places,” he said, “everything on the menu is great." More options are found nearby in Uptown, where people gather in the evenings for cocktails with friends or grab a bite to eat at establishments such as Brim, which offers a gluten-free menu. Various local businesses, selling clothing, books and gifts, are also worth exploring. The neighborhood's south end is next to Whole Foods, the closest supermarket in Cedar-Isles-Dean.

From condos to estates
Cedar Isles' housing is diverse, Brekken said. Embellished Tudors sit beside brick colonial revivals and sleek condos, showing the neighborhood's eclectic nature. Houses on the gridded streets have modest yards shaded by maple trees, while condos at the neighborhood's south end offer views of Bde Maka Ska. In the north end, larger homes overlook the Cedar Lake waterfront. Prices typically range from $450,000 to $550,000 for condos and $500,000 to $800,000 for houses. Exceptions include lakefront houses with private docks and pools, which range in price from $1 million to $4 million.

A secluded beach in the city
Once a local secret, the hidden beach on Cedar Lake can be reached through the woods of Burnham Woods. Despite its newfound popularity, residents still consider Cedar Lake Beach "one of the best beaches around” for its privacy, clear waters and soft sandy shore. Residents put down their towels to sunbathe or get a workout paddleboarding in the water during the open hours of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. "What's unique about Minneapolis is that the city owns its lakes and parks, so people don't have to pay for a waterfront property to access these areas. Anyone can enjoy nature here," Brekken said. Lake of Isles and Bde Maka Ska are typically less crowded.
Residents enjoy a day at the beach at Cedar Lake East Beach.

The Cedar-Isles-Dean Neighborhood Association (CIDNA) plays an active role in the community, organizing monthly board meetings and park clean-ups. "The people that live here are all very friendly and care deeply about the community," Brekken said. These tend to be the people who vote, organize, and volunteer; they even run a local newspaper called The Hill and Lake Press." To keep up with activities, residents can check the CIDNA website’s regularly updated events calendar.

Most people in this area are in the service industry because of the abundance of shops and restaurants. It seems that employers make sure they pay their workers well and are understanding.

I haven't seen or heard about many crimes in the 12 years I've lived here. It's a safe area with lots of police, but not too much where you start to feel on edge.
