Minot is a rural Maine town near recreation areas and Lewiston-Auburn
Situated about 8 miles from Lewiston-Auburn, Minot (pronounced MY-nut) is a peaceful country town with multi-acre properties and access to outdoor recreation. “It’s a lot of farmland, and it’s a bedroom community for Lewiston-Auburn,” says Lois O’Connor, a broker with Sunset Lakes Real Estate. Nearby parks and recreation areas provide plenty of opportunities to get outside. Despite the area’s secluded feel, downtown Auburn is only 15 minutes away.
Plenty of outdoor recreation in every season
Maine’s snowy winters don’t keep Minot’s residents indoors. There are around 50 miles of snowmobile trails in the community, which are maintained by the Minot Moonshiners Snowmobile Club. Nearby, the Lost Valley Ski Area has 22 trails for skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing. There are plenty of warm-weather activities too, like off-roading at Hemond’s MX and Offroad Park, which has several tracks and offers motocross lessons. The over 300-acre Mount Apatite Park nearby has about 3 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, and rockhounds can search the park for tourmaline and quartz. The Minot Hebron Athletic Association hosts kids’ baseball and soccer leagues.

Homes sit on multiple acres of hilly, forested land
Minot is a hilly and forested area with a few scattered farms. The Cape Cod, colonial and ranch-style homes here are spread far apart, and some homes have views of nearby foothills and distant mountains. There are a few suburban-style areas where homes sit on cul-de-sacs but still maintain a feeling of privacy and open space. On average, properties have about 3 acres, but some have up to 40 acres.
Prices vary depending on acreage, square footage and condition, but in general, homes under 2,000 square feet range from $230,000 to $500,000, while larger homes range from around $400,000 to $900,000. Manufactured homes also sit on multiple acres and range from around $130,000 to $440,000, depending on size and condition. Undeveloped land ranges from around $50,000 to $300,000, depending on acreage and location.
Dotting the picturesque countryside surrounding Minot, many homes enjoy a distinctly rural character.

A car-reliant community with snowy winters and a low crime score
State Routes 119 and 121 are Minot’s main roads, and Lewiston-Auburn is about 8 miles away. According to O’Connor, Maine’s snowy winters rarely impact travel. “Maine has the equipment to handle the snow, and they do a really good job of maintaining the roads,” O’Connor says. Nearby houses of worship include the United Methodist Church of Minot. The overall CAP Index crime score is 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4. Central Maine Medical Center is about 10 miles away, and Portland International Jetport is a 41-mile trip.
Residents gather for community-focused events
Each summer, Minot’s residents gather for the Annual Community Day. The one-day celebration begins with a kids’ bike parade in the morning, followed by a log-cutting competition and pie-eating contest. Dunk tanks, bounce houses and kids’ games add to the carnival atmosphere.
Most restaurants and stores are in surrounding towns
Minot Country Store is the community’s only place to pick up essentials or a bite to eat. The store offers a variety of snack foods and beverages, and it serves burgers, sandwiches and all-day breakfast to-go. In nearby Mechanic Falls, Village Pizzeria Restaurant and Lounge serves Italian comfort food in a casual atmosphere. Nearby grocery stores include Future Foods and Hannaford. More options and national retailers like Target are in Lewiston-Auburn.

An unusual road name pays tribute to a local celebrity
Minot’s Jackass Annie Road is named after the town’s most famous resident. Mesannie Wilkins, known as Jackass Annie, gained national attention in the 1950s for riding her horse, Tarzan, from Maine to California. She was considered a symbol of the American independent spirit, appeared on several television shows and published an autobiography before passing away in 1980. Today, Jackass Annie Road is a local monument to her story.
