Lying among the lakes
With the sun glinting off the waters of its namesake, Sunset Lakes offers a paradisal environment on the edge of the Everglades in southern Florida. Framed and bounded by Sunset Lake and South Sunset Lake, the neighborhood offers its residents slightly more inland properties or waterside homes with backyards leading right to the waves. Through the master-planned, gated community’s ornate entrance, the Miramar neighborhood is replete with lake views and includes plenty of recreation opportunities while also lying close to a major highway and several local establishments for shopping and dining.

Homes on the waterfront
Sunset Lakes offers uniqueness in home placement, including properties on a number of mini-peninsulas jutting out into the lake. “It’s a newer development,” says Roger Schaeffler, a Realtor with Florida Realty of Miami. “Homes typically go for between $700,000 and $900,000, and they’re Mediterranean-style homes. It’s a great neighborhood.” Spanish- and Mediterranean-style designs make up most of the homes in Sunset Lakes, many with tiled roofs and highly-arched construction, lining the streets alongside palm trees and often with pools in the backyard. Some other residences in Sunset Lakes have sold for over the million-dollar mark, including some on SW 47th Street, which runs the length of the most prominent peninsula and ends in a roundabout along the water. Other properties have gates running along the waterfront for safety purposes, but the view is nonetheless scenic.

Schools at neighborhood’s edge
Sunset Lakes Elementary School marks the beginning of education for students within the neighborhood, with a palm-tree canopy lining the front façade of the building welcoming attendees through its doors. The school, which receives an A-minus from Niche, is located at the northeasternmost corner Sunset Lakes. After fifth grade there, enrollment has to travel beyond the Sunset Lakes boundary for further learning. Glades Middle School is just under 15 minutes southeast, hosting grades six through eight while scoring a B-plus with Niche and rating highly in middle schools for the district. Everglades High School follows with ninth through 12th grades, scoring an A-minus and ranking in Niche’s top 50 standout high schools in Florida. It’s also well-regarded in terms of its diversity and college preparation acumen.

Community center amenities
For some outdoor recreation, the Sunset Lakes Community Center is the neighborhood’s primary outlet besides the lake itself. “The lake is a marvelous view,” Schaeffler says. “The community clubhouse has a great pool, tennis courts, jogging paths and a clubhouse you can rent.” Other amenities at the center include two fields for soccer or football, a pair of basketball courts, fitness gym and ballroom for events. Just across the boundary, near the elementary school, is Harbour Lake Park, which offers a playground track and picnic areas to its visitors.

Restaurants and shopping just minutes away
Though the gated community is located among the lakes, it’s not a far drive to get to some local restaurants and stores. “There’s plenty of fine dining and shops,” Schaeffler says. “Personally, I love a place close to Sunset Lakes, an Italian joint called Il Toscano Ristorante Italiano. They have the best risotto in town.” Main thoroughfare Miramar Parkway is a little closer to Sunset Lakes itself and has some area staples of its own, including Miga’s Steakhouse and Sushi Sake. Miga’s offers Latin-American food in a deli atmosphere, while Sushi Sake is within mere minutes of Sunset Lakes’ entrance in the Shops at Sunset Lakes. The shopping center also hosts local businesses alongside a Publix for groceries.

East of the Everglades
Just across a vertical stretch of Sunset Lake and Route 27 to the west sprawl the Everglades, with the neighborhood lying near the midpoint of the wetlands’ north-south expanse. Filled with trails winding through grassland and forest alike, plus visitor centers, opportunities for other recreation like biking and even ghost tours, the “River of Grass” unfolds over 1.5 million acres.

Half an hour’s haul to other Florida cities
Further down Miramar Parkway lies a partial-cloverleaf highway interchange, providing access onto Interstate 75 within less than a 10-minute drive from Sunset Lakes. Via that highway, which runs as far north as the Canadian border, motorists can reach the downtown Miami area, Tampa Bay and several other major Florida areas before crossing into Georgia. “Florida’s Turnpike is also right there,” Schaeffler says. “Sunset Lakes is just over half an hour south of Fort Lauderdale and a little over half an hour north of Miami.”
