Northside
Housing options from vintage to modern
Homes in Northside include many Craftsmans and bungalows from the first half of the 20th century. Several of these houses were built for railroad workers at the time. They are close together on walkable city streets with sidewalks and mature trees towering over them. The neighborhood started seeing more development in the 1970s and 1980s, with ranch-style homes and modest cottages popping up. Many houses in the area have been renovated and remodeled recently with updated paint, heating systems and roofs. These homes typically cost between $280,000 and $500,000. There are townhouses and condos, including modern contemporary buildings, throughout the neighborhood as well. These range from $200,000 to $400,000.Gathering with neighbors for popular events
Northside hosts several community events that help solidify the neighborhood spirit. The annual block party is held in conjunction with the Westside neighborhood and features live music, food vendors and games. Residents gather with their neighbors for an entire day of fun, and kids can enjoy a bouncy house, face painting and bubble machines. The block party has been held at various times of the year, including July and October, and has moved around the neighborhoods. Residents also get together on Summer evenings for the Missoula Outdoor Cinema. "It was just organically started, and it's been going on for decades now. In the summers, they run old movies on the side of the old elementary school. You go, and you pay your fee, and you can watch movies with your neighbors. They serve popcorn, and you bring a blanket, and everybody enjoys the movie," says Sheila Gaynor-Mischke, a broker at City Homes Missoula with Kelly Right Real Estate and longtime Missoula resident. The movies are open to the public and take place on Saturday evenings in July, August and September. All proceeds from the movie nights support the North Missoula Community Development Corporation, a nonprofit that works to promote affordable housing in the area.Casual dining and local groceries in north Missoula
Northside is a primarily residential area, but there is some commercial activity in the southeastern edge of the community. Pagoda Thai & Chinese Restaurant is a casual spot on North 5th Street serving Asian cuisine, including orange chicken and crab rangoons. Residents can stop in the local fast-food eatery SoupFarm on North Orange Street for a quick meal. This restaurant is popular for its vast menu of soups and take-and-bake pot pies. A drive-thru Florence Coffee Company stand on North 3rd Street serves specialty coffee drinks and huckleberry smoothies. Residents are conveniently located close to the shopping of downtown, which includes sporting goods, clothing and antiques. Numerous parks and outdoor areas allow Northside residents to enjoy the scenery of western Montana. The park is also home to the Northside Community Garden, part of the Garden City Harvest nonprofit. Locals can rent plots at the garden to grow food for themselves, friends or family. Garden City Harvest provides tools and resources to help people get started with growing their own food. Residents can enjoy hiking in the North Hills from the Froehlich Trailhead, located near the Interstate 90 on-ramp north of the neighborhood. "The North Hills are a protected conservation easement that overlooks Northside. There are a lot of hiking trails up there that overlook the city," says Rye. From here, hikers climb up the side of the mountain and can connect to several other trails, including the City View Trail and the North Hills Ridge Trail. The hike south to Waterworks Hill offers scenic views of the city below and is a popular place to watch the sunset.Walk, bike or bus around Missoula
Northside's convenient location makes it easy to get around Missoula. "The proximity to downtown is fabulous. You can ride your bike to work downtown. It's bike-friendly and it's walking-friendly," says Gaynor-Mischke. Residents who prefer to bike or walk can use the Northside Pedestrian Bridge, which connects Grand Street in Northside to Railroad Street downtown. Interstate 90 is just north of the neighborhood and is the main east-to-west route through western Montana. Residents can take I-90 about 7 miles northwest to get to Missoula Montana Airport. The drive into downtown is about 1.5 miles on Old U.S. 93, which passes through a tunnel under the railroad tracks. Route 3 of the Mountain Line bus system also passes through the neighborhood, making a loop around the community and taking residents to downtown. The closest full hospital to the neighborhood is Providence St. Patrick Hospital on Broadway Street, about 1.5 miles away.
