Established Missoula neighborhood with strong community spirit
As one of the oldest neighborhoods in Missoula, Northside has had a long time to develop its identity. Over the years, this small residential neighborhood between Interstate 90 and the Montana Rail Link tracks has become known as a place steeped in community spirit. "It's a very quaint and well-connected neighborhood. The people that live there share a lot of things. They babysit each other's kids," says Stacy Rye, a Real Estate Agent with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Montana Properties who has sold multiple homes in the area. "There's a sense of community on the Northside because of the geographic way it's located north of the railroad tracks." That neighborly spirit is evident in community events like the annual block party, which brings residents together for live music, food and games. During the summer, neighbors get together for outdoor movies at the old elementary school on Worden Avenue, an event that started organically and has grown into a favorite activity in the area.

Housing options from vintage to modern
Homes in Northside include many Craftsmans and bungalows from the first half of the 20th century. Several of these houses were built for railroad workers at the time. They are close together on walkable city streets with sidewalks and mature trees towering over them. The neighborhood started seeing more development in the 1970s and 1980s, with ranch-style homes and modest cottages popping up. Many houses in the area have been renovated and remodeled recently with updated paint, heating systems and roofs. These homes typically cost between $280,000 and $500,000. There are townhouses and condos, including modern contemporary buildings, throughout the neighborhood as well. These range from $200,000 to $400,000.

Gathering with neighbors for popular events
Northside hosts several community events that help solidify the neighborhood spirit. The annual block party is held in conjunction with the Westside neighborhood and features live music, food vendors and games. Residents gather with their neighbors for an entire day of fun, and kids can enjoy a bouncy house, face painting and bubble machines. The block party has been held at various times of the year, including July and October, and has moved around the neighborhoods. Residents also get together on Summer evenings for the Missoula Outdoor Cinema. "It was just organically started, and it's been going on for decades now. In the summers, they run old movies on the side of the old elementary school. You go, and you pay your fee, and you can watch movies with your neighbors. They serve popcorn, and you bring a blanket, and everybody enjoys the movie," says Sheila Gaynor-Mischke, a broker at City Homes Missoula with Kelly Right Real Estate and longtime Missoula resident. The movies are open to the public and take place on Saturday evenings in July, August and September. All proceeds from the movie nights support the North Missoula Community Development Corporation, a nonprofit that works to promote affordable housing in the area.
