Urban farms in a central Missoula neighborhood
While River Road is a centrally located urban neighborhood in Missoula, residents here are used to living off the land. “It has a lot of urban farms, so you may find a home with acreage and a small urban farm where you can grow vegetables,” says Brittni Hertz, a sales associate with the Hertz Team at ERA Lambros who has sold multiple homes in the neighborhood. “You’ll also find the community garden center where you can get a plot and grow your own little farm.” Garden City Harvest is a local nonprofit with its headquarters in the neighborhood. The organization has a community farm where residents can rent a plot and grow their own produce for themselves, friends or family. The headquarters are located on River Road, and the neighborhood has two more community gardens—one on North Grove Street and one on Milwaukee Way. In addition to the urban farms in the neighborhood, stores like The Good Food Store and Natural Grocers offer residents easy access to local and natural produce.

Established homes passed down for generations
Homes in River Road are primarily ranch-style houses and raised ranches. Many have been lived in by the same families for generations. “A lot of homes have been generational. Grandma’s house is now the grandchild’s house. People like the area, so they typically don’t move a lot,” says Jauna Poindexter, a broker associate with Berkshire Hathaway who has sold homes in the area. Most houses are built close together in urban or suburban settings. Built-in garages are common, and mature trees frame the neighborhood streets. There are some 21st-century homes in the neighborhood, often in the contemporary Craftsman style. Most single-family residences cost between $400,000 and $800,000. Townhouses and condos have also become more common in the 21st century, and most cost between $400,000 and $600,000.

Groceries are available at Good Food Store, a local grocery store selling natural and organic foods. Natural Grocers is a chain on 3rd Street that specializes in high-quality produce and foods. Locals can also shop at Frank’s Little Farm, a family-owned urban farm at the corner of Curtis Street and Wyoming Street. The farm sells produce at its roadside stand and the weekly Missoula Farmers’ Market downtown. It also offers a Community Supported Agriculture option, where residents can purchase a share of the farm and receive produce throughout the season.
