Ample green space 12 miles from downtown
The suburbs of Canterbury are a haven for commuters looking for more green space while still having a reasonable 12-mile drive to Mobile. "People here have great access to Mobile and other cities on the Gulf, like Pascagoula, Mississippi," says Barbara Stiell, Realtor for 16 years with American Dream Realty. People feel removed from the city, but it's a straight shot to downtown Mobile on Interstate 10. Wooded space surrounds manicured suburban communities with a range of homes, from cozy cottages to Colonial Revival mansions, with a median price of $240,000. "People love the walkability," says Stiell, "most communities have wide streets and nice sidewalks." Many folks can walk to Mims Park to play on the athletic fields, and neighborhood kids play rec football and baseball games here. Having more green space doesn't mean giving up convenient shopping. Folks drive a mile down Government Boulevard for groceries, home supplies, or to grab a bite. Students may attend Mobile County Schools, including Burns Middle School, which is less than a mile from many homes.

Canterbury is home to a handful of communities. Curving streets and cul-de-sacs give way to large, manicured lawns and driveways wide enough to fit multiple vehicles. Cottage, split-level, prairie-style and ranch-style homes from the 1970s comprise most of the neighborhood. These 1970s homes range from $180,000 for a cozy three-bedroom cottage to a $250,000 three-bedroom prairie-style with a shady front porch built for a rocking chair. Newer and larger homes can be found on the higher end of the spectrum, like a recently built four-bedroom Craftsman for $600,000 with luxurious interior design or an expansive Colonial Revival mansion on a sprawling lot for $700,000.
