West Mobile County Park is 6 miles from Dawes and is known for its athletic fields. Families and young athletes may be found at the park for football, baseball and soccer games. Hankins Middle, which earns a C, and Theodore High, which earns a C-plus. Hutchens students may go on Dawes Intermediate, which earns a B-plus, and Bernice J. Causey Middle, which earns a B. Students can then filter into Baker High, which earns a B-plus. "Baker High is one of the area's most highly-rated schools," says Beck. "It's the third-highest-rated high school in the state, and it's something that buyers consider when moving over to this area." Baker High also features one of the top quiz bowl teams in Alabama.

Dawes is 5 miles from a small shopping area off Theodore Dawes Road. There's a Walmart, Rouses Market, Dollar Tree, and several chains and locally-owned restaurants. D'Michaels serves casual gyros and Philly cheesesteaks, while El Rincon is known for its taco platters. The neighborhood is 7 miles from West Mobile's major retail hub on Schillinger Road. There are many big box stores, like Target, Walmart, At Home, Hobby Lobby and Lowe's. "It's where everyone goes here in West Mobile," says Summer Poole with WKRG News 5, who was born and raised in Mobile. "There are a ton of restaurants and stores, and it's at a central point, so you're close to all these things from almost anywhere in West Mobile."
