Quiet suburban enclave off busy Moffett Road

Quiet streets and houses on large lots define the laidback Mobile suburb of Forest Highland. Though the neighborhood has a residential feel, an array of restaurants and businesses line the adjacent Moffett Road, and West Mobile’s amenities are a short drive away. "There is a lot going on in the area," says Eric Coleman, who has been selling homes for Re/Max in the region for nearly 10 years. "The proximity to [Interstate 65] is nice, but we're also very close to the University of South Alabama if you want to go catch a game or visit campus." The university is about 5 miles away and it's less than 10 miles from the Shops at Schillinger, West Mobile's major shopping center.

Large lots with ranch-style homes in Forest Highland

Most of the homes in Forest Highland are three-bedroom ranch-style houses built between the 1950s and 1980s. Prices typically range between $145,000 and $215,000. "There is great value here from a price point perspective," Coleman says. "The utilities are also on the city side, and that leads to a lower cost of living." The houses sit back from the main roads and have long driveways providing private parking. Homes feature large yards, and tall trees give a sense of privacy. Sidewalks line the neighborhood's roads, so residents can easily go on morning runs or walk their pets. Forest Highland has a CAP Index Score of 2 out of 10, which is lower than the national score of 4.

Soul food at Taste of Heaven Cafe

Small businesses, chain restaurants and grocery stores line Moffett Road, a major thoroughfare adjacent to the neighborhood, including Piggly Wiggly and Taste of Heaven Cafe, a soul food spot offering dishes like fried fish and mac and cheese. On nearby North University Boulevard, the Walmart has an attached pharmacy for convenience. About 5 miles from Forest Highland, the Shops at Schillinger is a shopping center with big-box stores like Target and Lowe's, and for entertainment, an AMC Cinema and Bowlero bowling alley. Nearby, Wintzell's Oyster House offers everything from salmon to steaks and promotes Mobile pride by hanging the University of South Alabama banners on the walls.

Access to Spring Hill Lake and South Alabama Jaguars football

Municipal Park is a short drive from Forest Highland and offers many recreational opportunities, including a walking loop, an 18-hole disc golf course and a playground and visitors can also launch a kayak or fish on Spring Hill Lake. The park shares space with the public Azalea City Golf Course, Mobile Botanical Gardens and Mobile Tennis Center. A wooden walking bridge that crosses Spring Hill Lake and leads to the Mobile Museum of Art. In addition to galleries showcasing local and national artists, the museum also has art classes for youth and adults, family art nights and community art socials. One of the community's biggest draws is its proximity to the University of South Alabama. Realtor Jennifer Ballard with Bellator Real Estate, who has sold homes for nearly 10 years, notes the popularity of watching the Jaguars play at Hancock Whitney Stadium each autumn. "We recently built a new football stadium, which we're all excited about--game day is a big deal here," Ballard says. This state-of-the-art facility has over 95 concession stands and seats 25,450 spectators.

Mobile County Public Schools including Orchard Elementary

Forest Highland children may attend Mobile County Public Schools, beginning at Orchard Elementary, which earns a C-plus rating on Niche. Students may then move on to Semmes Middle School, which has a C rating. Blount High gets a C-minus but Niche rates Blount as being in the top 10 percent of all high schools for athletics, and it has garnered five football state championships. The school also has career-focused academies for students who want to have a career in construction, allied health or business management.

Interstate 65 is nearby

Moffett Road borders the neighborhood and offers easy access to Interstate 65. There is limited public transportation, so residents will need a car. Downtown Mobile and major employers at the waterside, like APM Terminals, are 12 miles from the community. USA Health Providence Hospital is 5 miles away, Mobile Regional Airport is 7 miles and Mobile International Airport is 13 miles away.
