Georgia Avenue
Century-old homes with modern updates
The grand old homes along Dauphin Street have changed hands many times over the years, but their original flavor and flare have been preserved. Victorian spires and gables of century-old Colonials peek out from behind the leafy canopy of Georgia Avenue’s mature oaks. Ornamental details, characteristic of early 20th-century homes, from gingerbread trim to Corinthian columns, give this community its unique style.“It’s an exciting, eclectic, close-knit neighborhood with a beautiful mix of old homes,” says Gustin. While it is possible to find some newer builds, such as ‘80s Craftsmen or ‘70s ranch-styles, most homes in the area are at least a century old. The covered, wrap-around porches of painted Victorians and Southern Colonials face the web of sidewalks connecting the residential grid of the neighborhood.
Moderate-sized homes in Georgia Avenue sell for a median price of $270,000, but spacious, meticulously renovated homes that preserve the old-world beauty of the house while adapting it to modern standards of appliances and wiring, can exceed $500,000.
As Georgia Avenue is in a historic district, there is an expectation from the local historic society and the Mobile Historic Development Commission that homeowners will maintain the original character of their property. A permit will be required for major renovations to the exterior of homes.
Accelerated academics at local high school
Mobile County Public Schools serve the neighborhood. Children start school at Leinkauf Elementary, rated C on Niche, and continue to Calloway Smith Middle School, rated C-minus, before graduating from C-plus-rated Murphy High School. The neighborhood is also home to The Alabama School of Mathematics and Science, an A-plus-ranked public high school located just off Dauphin Street. It offers admitted students an accelerated academic environment and a STEM-focused curriculum.
A neighborhood arboretum
Residents looking to relax can head to Cornerstone Gardens & Arboretum, which was designed as a place of meditation. This restful green space includes a formal British garden, one of the largest privately owned koi ponds in the area, and a fragrance garden that delights the senses.Springhill Recreation Center is the place for residents with energy to burn. The center features a multipurpose community space, an indoor athletic facility and a walking trail.

Georgia Avenue is home to several small businesses, like Atchison Home, an upscale antique store. At the Red or White Wine & Gourmet Center, neighbors can enjoy a glass of wine and a cheeseboard in an intimate setting. Guncle's Gluten Free Bakery, the first and only one of its kind in Mobile, sells homemade, gluten-free pasties and baked goods.Mobile Mardi Gras in Georgia Avenue
George Avenue is bustling with activity. Gustin says, “It’s a close-knit neighborhood that celebrates yearly events together, like neighborhood Christmas parties, and Mardi Gras is a big deal here.” Mardi Gras is such a popular event on the neighborhood’s social calendar that Georgia Avenue is a stop on the city’s parade route.Easy downtown and beach access
Residents can get around Georgia Avenue and its surrounding neighborhoods with relative ease. “It’s super walkable,” says Gustin. “People walk all the time, and we have a very good bus service. But most people use a car.” However, there are few bike lanes so cycling can be treacherous on the roads.Downtown is only a time minute ride away by bus or car, and the popular beaches of Dauphin Island can be reached in under an hour via AL-193.
